The Paladin loved that dog

john-wick-615155l

John Wick. In the post-Matrix Keanu Reeves era it is perhaps his best film. The story is simple, man loses his wife, wife gives man a dog, punk kills dog, man cuts a swath of death and destruction across New York avenging his dog. The concept itself it pretty funny, but in the little time we have with the dog the directors, Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, make you the audience actually love the dog too and you wouldn’t mind taking a baseball bat to the entitle Iosef (Alfie Allen).

More than the excellently scripted fight scenes, dialog that plays to Keanu “Whoa!” Reeve’s strengths, and a plethora of exceptional character actors from Ian McShane to John Leguizamo, the thing that really stood out to me was the style and weight to the world this movie was taking place in. The Continental is this world within a world, a hotel and club for hitmen and assassins with its own rules and currency. You get a sense of John Wick’s deep history in this world as he walks the halls so easily, yet he feels very foreign because he doesn’t really want to be there.

For a brief time John Wick was 100% Fresh at Rotten Tomatoes (it eventually settled at 83%) which should tell you this movie is something special. It’s the revenge movie with heart, style, and substance that doesn’t come around very often. If you missed it in the theaters, like a lot of people did, you can rent it on Amazon or pick it up at a RedBox and join me in my morning for the dog.

Why? Why the dog?!

iZombie Is The CW’s Other Comic Book Show!

cw-izombie-poster

iZombie, the CW’s new show loosely based off the Vertigo comic book of the same name, has been on the air for a few weeks, and I have been remiss in my duties by not telling you if you should be watching it or not.  Though after watching the first couple of episodes, I am not sure if I can answer that for you.  The cast is good, and it is definitely charming, but it is still feeling a little too much like a standard police procedural.

The show follows Olivia (Rose McIver) who was once a promising young physician, but after being turned in to a zombie has taken a job as a mortician so she will have constant access to her new favorite treat, brains.  Something interesting happens when she eats a person’s brain, she can see parts of their memories, and use some of their abilities.   Like for instance speak a foreign language that the deceased used to know.  This ability has made her quite useful to the local police.

The writers have set the show up well, and they have made the cast believable, but it still kind of seems like just another cop show.  A show about an undead crime solving mortician should be anything but ordinary.  Though it is still in the early going, so the show may still be finding its footing.  I will give the writers a few more chances to make this world a little more fun.

The cast is pretty good.  Rose McIver makes Olivia “Liv” quite charming, and you really feel for her unfortunate fate.  Her medical examiner buddy Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti played by Rahul Kohli keeps the show from getting too heavy, and he provides a good deal of the humor.  Malcolm Goodwin’s Clive Babinaux a Seattle police detective that is bad at his job is less interesting, but maybe the show will turn him around.

I want to like this show, and it has moments I think it is going to escape its procedural trappings, but so far it hasn’t.  I am still willing to give it more time because I think the premise could be a lot of fun, but we will see if the CW is willing to deal with the low ratings long enough for it to find itself, or if iZombie will shamble off the air.  For now I think it is still worth a watch, just to see if you like the concept.  There are definitely worse things on TV.

Star Wars Versus Star Trek, Shmee’s Take!

io9.com recently had their Sci-Fi/Fantasy March Madness poll, and it came down to Star Wars versus Star Trek.  It was a predictable final two, but one that was very hard for me to choose between.  On the surface they appear to be similar:  they take place in space, they have a multitude of alien species, and they both get in quite a few skirmishes, but they are in reality very different.

Star Wars is a mystic fantasy with a mysterious and powerful ancient religion, and no matter how far things progress, they will always stay the same.  Humanity can’t get better than it is.  There is no light without the dark.  Star Trek on the other hand is totally Sci-Fi.  Everything can be explained by science, and humanity is always getting better.  Give humans more time, and they will make themselves in to better people.

Those are both interesting premises (one person broke it down between theocracy and communism, and he wasn’t far off), and I love to delve in to their worlds, but the fantasy element is what makes Star Wars end up winning this battle for me.  It allows my imagination to run wild.  Sure it is a bit pessimistic about human nature (so am I), but it gives me space ninjas with laser swords, and a hope that one day I will be able to turn off my light switch at night by just concentrating really hard.  I guess I will always be thirteen.

That doesn’t mean the space exploration, and constant state of discovery that Star Trek provides is lost on me.  It just doesn’t give my imagination the same sort of jump start that Star Wars does.  I love both these franchises very much, but in the end if I had to pick one it would be Star Wars, prequels and all.  I hope next year io9.com doesn’t force me to pick between DC and Marvel, because that would just be cruel.

Shmee Glides With The Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury!

Logitech-G402-Hyperion-Fury

It was a sad day around the Shmee household.  Their trusty Logitech MX510 wasn’t gliding well, and it was coated with gross human skin deposits.  I tried to clean it, but it just wasn’t working like the same mouse I bought ten years ago, so I had to replace it.  As you can tell by my recent computer build, I am fairly brand loyal when it comes to computer parts and accessories, so if a mouse has served me well for over a decade, I am going to replace it with a member of its family.  I selected the Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury.

Besides the terrible name.  I mean really, Hyperion Fury?  This mouse has everything I could want:  A super high 500 image per second (IPS) rate, up to a 4,000 DPI resolution that you can change on the fly, and a built in processor to keep all that info heading to the computer without any lag.  Though by far the best part is just how it feels.  It is the perfect weight, and it glides like a dream.  I don’t know how Logitech does it, but their gaming mice make everything else feel like trash once you have used them.  I almost grimace every time I grab my mouse at work.  A good mouse makes all the difference.

There are mice with better specs out there, and even some in Logitech’s product line, but after awhile they are just flashing big numbers that you will never use.  You are never going to be able to control a mouse with 8,000 DPI well.  4,000 is even pushing it.  The big deal is the IPS.  The higher that is, the less chance there is of your mouse missing a movement, and at 500 IPS the Logitech G402 isn’t missing anything.  The only good reason to get a different mouse is to get a different button layout, or the super nifty braided cable on the Logitech G502.

I know spending $50.00 on a mouse seems a little steep when you can get a mouse for under $10 these days, but trust me if you use your computer a lot a good mouse makes it much more enjoyable.  Thanks to my job I get to try out a lot of different mice, and the Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury is by far the best one I use.  You may have good luck with some of the cheaper or fancier gaming mice out there, but for my money it is Logitech all the way.

Season Five Of The Walking Dead Has Been Put To Rest!

the-walking-dead-season-5-1

For the season five finale of the Walking Dead the writers tried something new.  Instead of a giant battle with lots of dead people, why not tie up a few story lines.  That is not to say the finale was not tense, and it did supply some good action, but it was more of a slow burn.  I think it was a nice change for once.  Not every finale has to have tanks and explosions (though those are things I love).  Plot development can be pretty satisfying too.

The juxtaposition of where they started this half season to where they ended it was quite nice as well.  In the first episode they were betrayed by what they thought was going to be a safe haven, and in the end they were setup to be possible betrayers of an actual safe haven.  The characters have been pushed so far they are willing to take what they need from very nice, well mostly nice, people.

It will be interesting to see what the crew will have to do to try and keep their new home safe.  There are a lot of bad people in that world, and they seem to be getting worse, and if the people of Alexandria think Rick is bad, they have no idea what is going to start coming for them.  I am pretty sure that the town’s population is going to decrease quite a bit.

So all in all it was a good season, with an interesting, but not terribly eventful finale.  It also gave me probably my favorite line of the show by Rick, “I was thinking, how many of you people am I going to have to kill to save your lives?”  Perfect Rick.  A little crazy, but 100% true.  We will see if Rick has to kill any Alexandrian’s to save their lives next season.
