Shmee Is An Omeganaut!

pax

I don’t talk about myself much here on Shmee.me (besides my opinions that is), even though this my blog, so I should talk about myself all the time.  I am pretty wonderful.  Anyway this is the first time I have been in anything kind of cool enough to talk about.  I will be an Omeganaut at this year’s PAX Prime!  Which means I will be playing in the PAX tournament known as the Omegathon.  Twenty (or at least I think it is twenty it usually is) of us will play games to the death (or elimination, probably elimination) for a fabulous prizes.

I have gone to PAX/PAX Prime every year since this thing started except for 2013 (I was in Hawaii, cry for me), and this is the first time I have gotten to compete, so if you are at PAX Prime this year come and cheer me on, or if you want to stay home I am sure it will be on Twitch or YouTube.  Anyways wish me luck!

Hey just for fun watch this video for Alan Tudyk’s Con-Men!

Batman Does Battle With The Arkham Knight!

batman-arkham-knight-poster

The third Batman game from Rocksteady Studios has finally come out, Batman: Arkham Knight, and I am in love with it.  Rocksteady says this is their last game about the Dark Knight, and if that is true it is a wonderful way to go.  That is not to say the game is without its faults, it has some big ones, but the positives far outweigh the negatives.  Between this game and The Witcher 3, we already have two game of the year contenders.

Arkham Knight takes place about a year after the events of Batman: Arkham City, and all the criminals of Gotham have teamed up to take the Batman down.  The most obvious two being Scarecrow and the new mysterious, totally not the Red Hood, titular Arkham Knight.  There is no holding back this time, the entire city is at stake, so Batman gets to use all his tools to save the city!  If this is your first Arkham Batman game don’t worry, you will pick up the story quick.

The story can get a little goofy at times, and they keep trying to tell you that Arkham Knight is a totally new character even though they keep more than hinting who it is.  So if you are thinking, “Hey is that just the Red Hood in Batman armor?”  Yes, yes it is.  If you are new to the Batman universe than that will mean nothing to you, but if you have at least some knowledge of Batman’s lore it will explain a lot of this story.

The combat continues to be awesome, free-flowing, brutal, and rhythmic.  Like a dancing game that allows you to punch people in the face.  The better you dance the less you get hit, and the more sculls you crack.  It is great.  All of Batman’s stealth attacks still work too, so if you are more of a stalker in the dark sort of person, you will not be disappointed either.  You have a ton of gadgets to play around with to mix things up a bit as well.

In Batman: Arkham Knight like in previous games you get points as you go and do Batman stuff, and you can cash in these points for better gear.  Don’t worry this time around it didn’t feel like Batman was helpless until he upgraded his gear.  He is awesome, and he is just getting more awesome as he goes.  While we are talking about gear, I guess we need to talk about the Batmobile.  Since this seems to be the most divisive component to the game.

For the most part I think the Batmobile is great.  Cruising around taking out bad guys, and going on epic chases throughout the city.  All good.  Heck the Riddler quests that everyone mocked before the game came out are really fun.  They are silly and challenging in perfect Riddler fashion, but then there are the drones.  Oh man the drone sequences are terrible, and they are always clustered together, so you have to kill like 100 drones to get to something else.

To kill drones you go in to “Battle Mode”, and then dodge around until your cannon reloads.  Fire your cannon, and then dodge around until it reloads again.  If you can do that awhile without getting hit you can do a special move.  Sometimes the drones fire missiles at you so you have to use your machine gun to shoot them down because I guess Batman doesn’t know what a flare is.  While the hand-to-hand combat is a fluid dream, the drone combat is a clunky mess.  It would have been fine if it was something that you only did once in awhile, or was an optional mini-game, but when you are in the middle of a drone area the game kind of grinds to a halt.

Still if you push your way though the drones, the game gets amazing again, and all the dodging and reloading fades to the back of your mind.  Batman: Arkham Knight is a massive achievement that is held back from being perfect by one madding play type in game with dozens for wonderful ones.  I guess they can’t all be winners.  It is worth it get past those drones because the rest of the game is magnificent.

Shmee Casts The Young Han Solo!!!!

So I am going to get this out of the way right quick, Chris Pratt is not on this list.  Disney is already paying him to play Han Solo in Guardians of the Galaxy, so I am not going to let him double dip, and honestly his name comes up first for everything these days, thus I have a little Chris Pratt fatigue.  I actually struggled with this list a little because you need that certain smarmy charm to pull off the famed smuggler, so I had to ask The Paladin what he thought because if you need to know about hot young leading men in Hollywood you ask The Paladin.  He knows.  I kid, though I did ask him.  We agreed on number one, and right off the bat number five was his choice, so here we go!

5: Taron Egerton

He was able to be the likable thug in Kingsman, so changing that to be a smuggler should be an easy adjustment.  Plus he is still at the beginning of his career, so the paycheck wouldn’t sink the movie before it started.

4: Shawn Ashmore

Ashmore speaks at a Fox panel for "The Following" at 2013 Winter Press Tour for the Television Critics Association in Pasadena

I still have a hard time telling him and his brother apart, but Shawn Ashmore is the better actor.  He should be done being Ice Man for X-Men for the time being, and he has a great resume.  He usually plays things serious, but I think he could make Solo work.  He would just need to be a better version of his brother from Killjoys (sorry Aaron, I really like Killjoys though).

3: Emile Hirsch

Emile-Hirsch

My problem with Emile Hirsch is that I am not sure he can smile on screen, but the photo above proves he at least has the concept down, and Han mostly smirks anyway.  Really he is on this list because of Speed Racer.  If you were in Speed Racer I want you to succeed.  I am not sure there is anything more successful than Han Solo.

2: Liam Hemsworth

liam-hemsworth

Liam Hemsworth hasn’t sold himself to me as an actor yet, though he hasn’t had a lot to work with in the Hunger Games movies, but he is just so dang dreamy.  How can you not get lost in his eyes.  Quit mesmerizing me you Australian siren!  If he has any acting chops at all he would make a great Han Solo.  Though I would be worried he would smuggle away the hearts of my wife and daughter.

1: Chris Pine

chris_pine

In the end there was only ever one choice for the new Solo, Chris Pine.  I know he is Kirk already, but he just has the perfect devilish charm that you could hate and love all at the same time.  Plus his version of Kirk was pretty much Han Solo anyway, so this would just confirm it.  I know that is why I said I didn’t want Pratt to do it, but Pine doesn’t work for Disney just yet.  The only real reason I can see him not doing this movie is because he may be the Green Lantern soon, or in Wonder Woman.  Possibly both.  Anyway that would be a huge loss for this new solo, Solo flick because he is perfect.

That is my list.  Who do you think should be the new Han Solo?  Let me know!

Humans Beware!

humans-amc

Humans, the new show by AMC and Channel 4 debuted two weeks ago, and I have to say Summer TV just keeps getting better.  This show was going to be one of the highlights for the Xbox TV channel, but when Microsoft closed that down AMC swooped in and picked it up.  Though if they didn’t someone else would have because it is looking fantastic.

In a parallel time to our own they have created androids, Synths, to do their day to day tasks.  While most of them are non-thinking and only follow directions, some have artificial intelligence and feelings, and they don’t like being treated as slaves.  I can’t imagine why.  One family (with Jen from The IT Crowd!) may have got more than they wanted when they bought a new Synth for their family.

It really isn’t a new storyline (heck the show is a remake of a Swedish one), but the execution so far has been great, and I can’t wait to see how this all plays out.  The actors playing the Synths look and act just slightly off, so they make believable non-humans.  Did I mention Jen AKA Katherine Parkinson from The IT Crowd is in Humans? I did? Oh well she is, and she makes everything better.  Also I guess William Hurt didn’t get enough android action in AI, so he is back for more.

Humans is only slated to be eight episodes long, so not that much of a time investment.  Which makes it perfect for summertime viewing.  I hope the rest of the episodes live up to the promise of the first one.  AMC really knows how to green light great television!  I hope Preacher is this good when it finally airs.

In Search For The Theory Of Everything!

The-Theory-of-Everything

The 2014 film The Theory of Everything directed by James Marsh is a sweet look in the to the lives of Jane and Stephen Hawking.  The sweet part I was expecting, but the fact they didn’t gloss over the troubles of their lives is what made this movie special.  Instead of showing the Hawkings as some sort of gods among men, beyond reproach.  It just showed them as people, flaws and all.

The Theory of Everything starts when the couple met in college at Cambridge, and then follows them through Stephen’s (Eddie Redmayne) diagnosis, and of course his scientific discoveries.  It also shows how Jane (Felicity Jones) had to work hard and sacrifice everything to keep Stephen alive and give him the family they wanted.  However, if you are expecting a fairytale ending, you will disappointed.

While I was watching The Theory of Everything, I almost wanted it to end like thirty minutes earlier just so everyone would live happily ever after, but this move shows us the warts of Stephen and Jane’s relationship as well as the joys.  While I am not sure how much they changed of the real story to pretty it up for theater going audiences, at least they didn’t fall in the trap of making the characters perfect.  Biographies always work better if the people on screen seem like people.  AKA flawed.

Of course a good story is important for biographies, but actors are key.  We need to see those figures we know come to life on screen, and Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones played their parts brilliantly.  Especially Eddie (I guess he did win the Oscar for a reason).  To watch him slowly succumb to ALS was an amazing transformation.  Though Jones playing the dutiful, but exhausted wife was also perfectly on point.

After recently watching this film and Birdman, I was surprised that The Theory of Everything wasn’t more in the running for the Oscar for Film of the Year.  I guess people like their films a little jazzier than I do.  The Theory of Everything is a movie that is well worth your time, and if you watch The Theory of Everything, you may learn a little something about time as well.  Actually you won’t.  You will need to read Steven Hawking’s book for that.
