Let’s Take A Moment To Talk About Comic Book Stuff!

batmobile

There has been a lot of action in the comic book world recently, so I thought I would give my two cents about everything going on.  My two cents are very valuable you know!

The New Batmobile Is Revealed!

As you can see in the image above Batman’s new ride has been spotted.  It is a mix between the old stylized Batmobiles and the newer movies’ Tumblers.  I like it.  It shows that Batman is ready for anything, but it still looks fast, and It looks a lot like the Batmobile from the new Arkham Knight game.

Critics Praise Gotham!

Critics gave Gotham the “Most Promising New Show” award.  That is surprising since it is a police procedural, and one based on comic books.  Though it gives me hope that this will be a show worth watching.

A Supergirl TV Show?

super_girl

The team that has brought you Arrow and The Flash are working on Supergirl.  Supergirl is an odd choice since she is usually tied to her more famous cousin, but it would be fun to have a bright and bubbly superhero show on TV instead of all the angst.  I have heard that they may not want to use the Supergirl name since there is no Superman in which case they would use her Earth 2 moniker Power Girl.

They haven’t picked a channel for the show yet, but I am hoping NBC.  She and Constantine would be an awesome duo.  Constantine dealing with the magic and Supergirl laying waste to the bad guys would be a match made in heaven.  My only fear is that poor TV special effects would make the show look cheap.

Constantine Gets New Friends!

Speaking of Constantine, they have cast Emmett Scanlan as Jim Corrigan.  If that name doesn’t ring a bell don’t worry, but in the comic book world he dies and becomes The Spectre.  The Spectre loves to use his ghostly wiles to terrorize bad guys, so I think he will be a good fit with Constantine, and hopefully Dr. Fate.  This would also make sense since they were talking about making a Spectre TV show, and this way they could just spin it off.

I Was Wrong About The Rock!

He is indeed going to be Black Adam and not Shazam.  I guess he didn’t want to sign on for a lot of movies.  It might be time to head to the casting couch!

Michael Douglas Will Not Wear The Ant-Man Suit!

Even though Michael Douglas is playing the first Ant-Man Hank Pym, he will leave all the tight fitting suits to Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang.  It is a shame, I was hoping for some Ant-Man on Ant-Man action.

My thirteen year old self is super excited for all the upcoming comic book media!  I just hope it is all good.  I guess time will tell.

Take A Trip To Manhattan!

manhattan

It has been kind of a slow summer, so it is always fun to find a new show to watch.  My wife recently found out that even though Comcast doesn’t broadcast the channel WGN America it does have their shows On Demand, and one of those shows is Manhattan.  It is not about the burrow of New York City, but rather the Manhattan project.  Which as you know is where they created the Atom Bomb (You did know that right?).

The show doesn’t strive for historical accuracy, but since so much of it is a still a secret I am not sure how accurate they can be.  However, it is interesting to watch these scientists try and outsmart each other all while trying to end the war before more American lives are lost, and they are driven by the fear that the enemy will create the bomb first.  They think they know how destructive the bomb can be, but they are unsure and it scares them.  Plus the government is so scared that secrets will leak out that the scientists and their families are under constant scrutiny.

I don’t think this show will win any awards, but it is not the type of show that comes around a lot, and definitely not one that is made by a small Middle American regional channel.  I have been enjoying watching it, and I think that you would too.  Hey what else do you have to watch this summer?

This Blog takes place between 9:00AM and 10:00AM

Events happen in real-time.

That my friend is the sound of inevitability. For eight seasons we heard the reassuring movement of time despite the best attempt of foreign terrorists, domestic terrorists, madmen with nukes, foreign plots, bioweapons, and moles to bring down the U.S. of A. No matter what happened between hour One and hour Twenty-four you knew that Jack Bauer was going to burn it out of hiding, grab it by the throat, and crush its larynx. My wife watched the first two seasons and then just rolled her eyes whenever she’d catch me watching the continued adventures of Mr. Bauer and the CTU (which is also the name of my new Synthpop band). Yes, Jack is indestructible. Yes, there is always a mole in CTU. Yes, someone from Division wants a report. Yes, they just hacked a kernel.

Like death, taxes, and Chief O’Brien having to suffer at least once a season on DS9, Jack is something that is always true… an absolute in a world without absolutes. 24: Live Another Day lives up to the grand tradition, embraces it, and delivers exactly what those of us who have watched Jack Bauer and a revolving door of field agents do day after horrible day – to paraphrase Patton, “Make the other son-of-a-b&%#^ die for his country.” I think Patton and Jack would have gotten along quite well.

There’s no reason to go into what happened in this 12 episode season which took place in London, England. You’ve either already watched it because you are a fan, dismissed it because you are not a fan, or are a communist pig. 24 brings out absolutes like that.

What I can tell you is it was 24 and almost an improvement because they didn’t have 24 hours to pad with silly plotlines. Oh, there are silly plot lines for sure, they are just easier to ignore. It also brought closure to a lot of plot lines seeded throughout the whole series.

Inevitable. They will make another 24. And I know I will be watching it because like sands through an hour-glass so are the days of Jack Bauer’s life.

Luther

luther3

Idris Elba.

American audiences have been introduced to him only recently in Prometheus, the two Thor movies, and of course Pacific Rim in which he cancels the apocalypse. He also plays a very bad man in HBO’s #1 Ladies Detective Agency. However, over across the pond Mr. Elba is known for his role as DCI John Luther. Besides a few outliers like Batman and Columbo, England has created the vast majority of detectives you’ve ever seen or read. From the Great Detective, Sherlock, to the little old lady, Ms. Marple, English writers love to kill people and then solve the mystery.

The team behind Luther follow in this grand British tradition; killing and solving with the best of them in three series or as we say across the pond, seasons. I recently finished the four episodes of Series 3, so is it a show you need to see?

Yes, but start with Series 1 and 2 since each builds on the last and feed a lot of what’s going on in Series 3. There are essentially five stories going on: three mysteries, a love story, and Luther having to deal with his past. I didn’t care as much for the mysteries this go around, although the second one is a nice reflection of Luther. Series 1 and 2 had better ones, especially the finale of series 2. However, it’s not about the mysteries as much as it’s about Idris Elba acting the crap out of Luther.

Luther is powerful, incredibly brilliant, but the poor guy never seems to get a break and Elba, like a master craftsman, shows the emotions that are just bursting at the seams and often comes out in dramatic effect. I highly suggest Luther, it’s on Netflix and each Series is only a few episodes so you can watch it all in short order. And if you a more concrete reason…

Idris Elba.

Comic Con Starts Today!

comic-con

The San Diego Comic Con starts today!  I hope we get lots of new geeky movie and video game news, and of course some cool new comic books.  I am sure we will hear a lot about the Marvel movies and shows, Star Wars, DC’s TV show empire, and the Justice League movies, but I am hoping that this year’s show will still have a few surprises for us.  A new Green Lantern movie perhaps?

We shall see!  Is there anything you are hoping for out of this year’s Con?
