Apparently Even Superman Needs Coffee!

Feeling bad you can’t get your day going without a cup of joe?  Well it looks like you are in the same boat as Supes.  It looks like Joss Whedon’s reshoots are well underway.  Of course we all know that Wonder Woman is now the star of the JLA, and Superman? He can just continue just drink his coffee.  Diana has it covered.

Wonder Woman Is A Wonder!

I left the theater last night relieved.  Ever since Suicide Squad I had been worried that DC was going  to screw up Wonder Woman’s first solo film in her 75 year existence, but Gal Gadot, Patty Jenkins and crew pulled it off, and more than that, they gave the DC Movie Universe the hope and charisma it so desperately needed.

Wonder Woman follows Diana (Gal Gadot) from childhood on the island of Themyscira to her first outing as a hero in World War I.  This of course is a change from her comic book origins where she fought in World War II, but the time swap works well for this movie.  Seeing the horrors of The Great War really drive home her belief that she needs to stop this before more people get hurt or killed, and the world has not advanced so much that a sword wielding warrior on horseback would seem that out of place, but it still has advanced enough to provide plenty of opportunity for a little fish out of water humor.

The cast of this film is fantastic.  Chris Pine (the best Chris) as Steve Trevor is funny and brave, and a great guide to the “man’s world” for the Amazonian Princess.  His rag tag crew is a delight, but without Gal Gadot’s charm and strength this movie wouldn’t have worked.  She embodies Wonder Woman perfectly.  Angry at the injustices that are all around her, but still hopeful things can be changed for the better.  I also love Elena Anaya and Danny Huston as the main villains, they are wonderfully comic-book-y, but not in an over the top way.  They strike a good balance between maniacal sneer and believability.

That is not to say Wonder Woman is perfect however.  The final fight is a little forced and long and has too much dodgy CG.  The film at two hours and twenty-one minutes could have been tightened up a bit, but man, the second act of this movie is pretty much perfect, so I will take the slow start and generic end for those moments of perfection.  Watching Diana become the hero the world needed and enjoying doing it was rousing, and I am not exaggerating when I say, it made me cry a little.

We have been waiting forever for Wonder Woman to get her chance to shine on the big screen and Patty Jenkins delivered.  There have only been a handful of female led superhero films, and they have all been trash, so leave it to most iconic female comic book hero of all time to finally get it right.  Make sure that we don’t have to wait another 75 years for another Wonder Woman and go see this movie.  When Justice League comes out this November, Wonder Woman is going to be the draw.

Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Second Verse Is The Same As The First!

If you are wondering if you will like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 or not, just ask yourself whether you liked the first one or not.  They didn’t change the formula very much.  It is still a rag-tag group of rouges cracking wise and saving the galaxy.  This time with more daddy issues.  That really is pretty much the whole review, but you came for more, so here we go.

“Daddy issues” should be the be the subtitle to the film.  It turns out the whole crew, except Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) and Drax (Dave Bautista), have them, and this film explores them.  Especially Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) because his long lost his birth dad shows up.  Drax, to be fair, has other family issues because he ‘was’ a Dad.

The concept of family is a common theme with group based action films (e.g. all of the Fast and Furious films), and it is easy to see why.  You get the built in drama of learning to love and live with the “new” family juxtaposed against all of the baggage from their old “real” family, and we get to see what happens when those “families” collide.  I am guessing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will not be the last film to use this setup.  I mean Vol. 3 comes out two years from now, and those “daddy issues” will not just go away.

If you are looking for a funny film filled with a lot of action and a great group of character’s, and you are not looking for something more from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 versus what we got in Vol. 1, you will be very happy.  If you did want something more, and you were hoping this film would push the massive and now lumbering MCU forward in any real way, you may feel a little disappointed.  Thankfully this crew is too fun to let that disappointment sink in too deep.

Check Out The First Trailer For Thor: Ragnarok!

This trailer makes the third Thor movie look a little like Guardians of the Galaxy: Thor Edition, but I am okay with that.  It is a Thor movie that looks as crazy as it should, and it has Jeff Goldblum in all his Goldblum-iness, so that is pretty sweet.  Plus I am always up for a good reason to listen to some Led Zeppelin!  It is a long time until November, but I am sure we will see plenty more from this movie leading up to its launch.

Let’s Watch Some Trailers Today!

First up the new Spider-Man: Homecoming Trailer!

For the most part this trailer just gives us a better look at what we have seen before: a longer chat with Tony, a longer glimpse at what happens on the ferry, more Michael Keaton, and more time with Peter’s best friend.  All in all it looks pretty good, though nothing knocked my socks off.

Next up the first official Justice League trailer!

I know this came out a couple of days ago, but sometimes things move a little slow on my blog.  This trailer pretty much features all the footage from last year’s Comic Con, but with better editing and more Aquaman.  Which is great because Aquaman steals the show.  Finally a DC superhero that looks like he is having fun!  I thought that it was going to be up to Barry to deliver all the jokes, but it turns out Arthur has a sense of humor too.  Other than that, this movie uses the same blue and brown color pallet as Batman V Superman, so I am sure that will disappoint quite a few fans.  It is a good trailer, but not a great one, and trailers have never been a problem for Warner Brothers.  Scripts on the other hand…
