Kickstarting A Star Wars Fan Film? Bad Idea.

starwars-logo

So you may have heard of the Star Wars fan film Rise of the Empire on Kickstarter.  It has a lot of great people working on it, and it seems like a fun concept.  The problem is that I can’t see anywhere that mentions that they have Disney’s approval.  Why would you ask for people’s money when you know that you could be shut down at any moment.  I don’t get why people do this.  They think because they are not making a profit that their fan projects will be able to move forward.  They are wrong.  Big companies protect their intellectual property vigorously.  I can’t see Disney allowing someone the opportunity to make a film without properly licensing it first.  Plus Disney has to make sure it will work with their new universe.

If you want to try and make a fan film go ahead, but asking for people’s money to do it is irresponsible.  This goes for any sort of fan project based on a licensed property.  If you are going to do it, you will have to do it completely with your own money, and even then it will still probably be shut down, but at least you are just wasting your own money.  This is just a bad idea.

Geek Canon Isn’t Sacred!

marvel_collage_logo

For some reason geeks love to trash movies and TV shows that aren’t working for breaking canon.  Like somehow because a character’s origin is different, or they look or act slightly different than the paper version of themselves, that is why the property isn’t connecting with audiences.  It is a load of crap.  If something isn’t good, it isn’t because they didn’t consult the sacred texts.  If it is bad, it is bad due to normal problems like bad writing or poor acting/direction.  It is not just comic books.  Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Anime guys and gals love to rant about it too.

Marvel is doing great, and they aren’t following the canon at all.  The characters’ backgrounds and all sorts of things are totally different than they are in the comic books, and that is fine.  You will notice that the fans are saying DC should be more like Marvel, and follow the comic books more with their movies, but I am scratching my head and trying to figure out which comic books Marvel is following.  Sure they are using the books for inspiration, but the movies are completely different.  I am sure that when the Civil War movie comes out it will look nothing like its comic book counter part.

What matters first and foremost is that product is good.  If it changes things, who cares, as long as talented people created something fun with respect for what they are working with.  Sure it is nice if the people making the films and media don’t treat the canon like a dirty rag, but they surely don’t always have to worry about breaking it.  Lets not worry so much about the past, and maybe we should be hopeful about a very geeky future!

Neill Blomkamp Is Making Alien 5!

alien5

So on January 1st of this of this year Neill Blomkamp, the director of District 9 and the soon to be released Chappie, showed off some sweet images of an Alien movie idea he had been kicking around.  You can see them all on his Instagram account here.  Then he dropped the bomb that if he wanted to make the movie Fox had already said he could.  He just wasn’t sure that he wanted to take on such a big project, and after the failure of the Halo movie I can see why.  I guess someone at Fox found a check big enough to convince him to try.  Alien 5 is a go.

Fox is still making Prometheus 2, but with the mixed reception the first film got, they are no doubt doubling down on this very lucrative franchise. I wish Mr. Blomkamp the best of luck because his concept art looked amazing!  Just in case you need any more convincing to be excited for this movie here is Ripley in a Space Jockey mask!

Shmee Tours The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel!

BESTEXOTICMARIGOLDHOTEL

Mrs. Shmee and I recently sat down and watched The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.  What can I say it was Valentine’s Day weekend.  It was directed by John Madden (think Shakespeare in Love not football), and released by Fox Searchlight here in the good ol’ US of A.  This film is as predictable as they come, and it hits you with a lot of schmaltz.  Though with the quality of the of the cast and director it ends up being pretty good anyway.

The idea behind this movie is that a group of old English people can’t afford to live in Britain, so they all reply to an advertisement for a retirement home in India.  The home the titular Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and India are not what they expected, but they will grow and become better people for it.  You know the usual stuff.

The writing really was the weakest part of this film.  It is so cliché, and all the characters are very cookie cutter, but for the most part it does the trick.  It was just a shame they couldn’t elevate it at all.  Had they put a little more effort in this movie it could have been wonderful instead of the usual lovable mush.

The actors are all British film royalty, so even in their basic roles, they are amazing.  They make this movie much better than it should be.  I mean when you have Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, and Tom Wilkinson just to name a few, the movie is always going to be watchable.  Unlike the writers, they do elevate this film.

John Madden you can tell was inspired by filming in India.  It is lavishly shot.  The color and the throngs of people really come though.  It was also nice that he didn’t just show all of India as a giant slum like a lot films like to do these days.  To be fair there are a couple of slums in this movie, and I would guess in India as well, but I am pretty sure that there are nicer parts of the country as well.

Between the actors and director, this film is worth a watch, but if you are expecting something amazing, I am sorry to disappoint you.  It is fun and sweet, but not much more than that.  The sequel is about to hit theaters, so I wonder if it fixed this issues of film, or if they get worse (I am guessing since it is a sequel they get worse).

Don’t Hate On Developers For Dreaming!

godus

Recently famed developer Peter Molyneux came under fire for his new game Godus.  People were saying that he lied to them to get them to fund Godus on Kickstarter, and now he is abandoning the game and moving on to other things even though Godus isn’t finished.  I don’t think he lied, I think his problem is that he likes to dream big, and then share those dreams with anyone that will listen to him.

This is not a new problem with Molyneux, he has always loved to talk about his crazy ideas for games.  His original idea for Fable was a real world simulation that would allow you to plant trees and gardens and then come back years later and see the forests you planted, or see tiny villages grow in to massive cities.  Obviously that is not what we got.  Fable ended up being a fun, but light action RPG with a good control scheme, a unique conversation system, and it let you be good or evil.  Still good, but not what was originally talked about.  There have been two sequels, and in each one time has passed and things have grown up, and that has been cool to see, but there were no forests that I have planted.

Now had Molyneux promised a fun light RPG people would have been happy, but no the internet rage was great.  It still flows today.  It is like a hot stream of magma.  It never cools.  With Godus again his dreams got away with him.  He wanted to create the greatest god game off all time, but with a budget of just under a million dollars, he was never going to.  Instread he created an interesting little time waster that translated well to tablets, so he focused on the iPad version.  If this was normal development, this would have been fine, but since this was Kickstarter, the backers are wondering were their amazing game is.

I like that Molyneux dreams big, and I like that he shares those dreams with us.  Every other developer is so tight lipped that you never know what they are thinking until they show us a very polished trailer done by a highly paid marketing department.  I understand that it is frustrating to not see the games he was talking about, but at least he wants to create them.  His problem is that the reality of what he has to work with gets in his way, be it money or processing power.

I will say that his treatment of the winner of Curiosity, their odd digging game, could have been better.  They should have worked hard to make him a PR plus not a nightmare.  I am hoping they will do right by him in the end, and he will get to be the mega god or whatever in the final version of Godus.

I love to hear people talk about their dreams, so it is refreshing to hear developers share what they are working towards.  Still maybe they should save those dreams for Ted talks or interviews, and not post them to Kickstarter.  I think we could use a few more dreamers like Peter Molyneux in the game business, and maybe, just maybe we as gamers can try and keep our hate to a minimum.  Maybe it would also be wise not to preorder his games.
