From The Makers Of Coraline And ParaNorman: Kubo And The Two Strings!

Beattles music and katana! I am soooooo in!  I mean, I am generally in for whatever LAIKA makes, but this movie hits all the right notes for me (Notes, get it? I am so darn clever!  You are sooooo lucky to have me as a virtual friend).  It is going to be hard to wait for August for this to come out.  I guess I will have to bide my time watching the eight-million comic book movies coming out this year.

PlanetSide Warhammer 40,000? Yes Please!

To be fair the game is called Warhammer 40k: Eternal Crusade, but it is pretty much a PlanetSide clone using the Warhammer 40k license, and that is just aces with me!  For those of you that don’t know, PlanetSide is a persistent online first person shooter with different factions fighting for territory.  This game is described the same way except it is third person shooter, but the difference is minimal, and I am super excited!  For a more gameplay focused look at the game check out this video:

The game looks a little rough right now, but the dev, Behaviour Interactive, says they are focusing on gameplay first, so that is actually quite encouraging.  You can play right now if you are willing to pay for ‘Early Access’ through Steam, but since the game comes out in May, I think I will just wait for reviews.  Even so, it is an exciting concept that I hope turns out well!

Shmee Owns An Xbox One Elite Controller!

xbox_one_elite_controller

When the Xbox One Elite Controller was announced I shrugged it off as an expensive luxury that was sure to fail, but when reports started to come in that it was amazing, I was intrigued.  When I started to hear from everyday gamers saying that it was the best controller they had ever used, I had to have one.  After months of saving my money, hording Amazon gifts cards and waiting for it come back in stock, it is finally mine!  So what do I think of this expensive piece of plastic?  It is pretty darn great!

Overall they didn’t really change a lot from the normal Xbox One Controller, with the exception of the paddle buttons on the back and the trigger switches, but everything is just a little better.  The buttons are all ‘clickier’, the directional pad is more responsive, the texture of the controller feels better in your hand, and the weight is just a little heavier.  However, all those little changes make the controller so much better as a whole!

Getting back to those paddle buttons and trigger switches, they are a great addition as well.  The controller adds four paddles to the back of the controller to map as any other button using the Xbox Accessories app.  For myself, I took two of the paddles off and then remapped the paddles I left on as the bumper buttons, and it has been a much better game playing experience.  The trigger switches are nice because they shorten the distance the triggers have to travel before they are fully pressed, so for a first person shooter it means you can shoot faster.  Halo players rejoice!  Playing Forza?  Flip the switches back to get a more responsive ‘gas pedal’.

Other features like being able to change out the thumb grips and d-pad layout on the fly thanks to the controller’s magnetic connections are nice, but I don’t see myself doing that a lot.  Though using the magnets to rearranged paddles on the back, I have already used quite a bit, and it is pretty slick.  If you are wondering, the magnets hold very tight, so I am not worried about anything coming loose.

All in all I am very happy with my purchase.  Should every Xbox One gamer get an Xbox One Elite Controller?  It is hard to say.  Yes it is better then the normal controller in just about every way, but enough to justify the $150 price tag?  For me yes, no regrets, and if it was $100, I would say yes for everyone, but as it is now, I would say it is just for people who spend a lot of time with their Xbox One.  If you do get one, I am sure you will enjoy it.

Angie Tribeca Is The Naked Gun TV Show You Never Knew You Wanted!

Angie-Tribeca

Do you think dogs drinking lattes, people falling down open elevator shafts, or half naked men having very long slap fights are funny?  Do you have fond memories of the late great Leslie Nielsen seriously saying stupid stuff?  If your answers are yes to the questions above than you will love Angie Tribeca the new detective comedy on TBS staring Rashida Jones and created by Steve Carell.

Angie Tribeca (Rashida Jones), as you can guess, is a hard nosed detective that has issues with partners and authority, but she is the best detective on the force and is always able to solve the crime.  With the help of her partner of course.

With sooooo many cop shows on TV it is the perfect time to bring back the old school slapstick detective lampoon.  Plus it is refreshing in this age of more ‘realistic’ comedies ushered in by The Office to have something that is just out and out silly.  I understand coffee cups attached to fake dogs paws aren’t for everybody, but they makes me laugh, and it is nice to have someone else take a stab at the slapstick genre other than the Wayans brothers.

Rashida Jones who played the straight girl to Amy Poehler on Parks and Rec for so many years finally gets to let loose herself as Angie Tribeca, and her deadpan delivery of ridiculous dialog would make Leslie Nielsen proud.  The rest of the cast all bring their ‘A’ games as well quoting all their silly lines like they are of grave importance, or taking part in the multitude of pratfalls.

I love what I have seen of Angie Tribeca so far, but to be fair I also loved The Naked Gun.  If you don’t like slapstick comedy, Angie Tribeca will not be for you.  However, if you are like me and Leslie Nielsen is a personal hero you can watch the entire first season of Angie Tribeca right now On Demand, and you should.

Looks Like We Finally Got Our American Dr. Who With DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow!

Legends-of-Tomorrow-small

TV pilots are always tricky and almost never good, which is why I have hope for the CW’s messy DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.  The first episode was not great, but it had some great moments.  If the show can build on those moments, Legends is going to be a lot of fun!

The premise behind DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is that the immortal Vandal Savage has come back from the dead and takes over the world in the future, so Time Master, Rip Hunter gathers up a group of heroes to take him on in the past!  However, changing the timeline is hard to do, and they will be facing more obstacles than just Savage himself.

Time traveling superheroes are always fun, but they always causes problems too.  Like if you have a time machine, can’t you just go back to the moment before Savage gains is immortality and kill him or stop him there?  Sure, then we wouldn’t have Hawkman and Hawkgirl, but I am sure they would give up their immortality to save the world.  Still, if the show can give us more moments like the White Canary, Captain Cold, and Heat Wave in a bar in the 70’s causing trouble, we are in for a treat.

The tone of the pilot also swung wildly from the seriousness of Arrow to the comic book zaniness of The Flash, and it was by far at its best when it was zany.  Some serious moments will help the show out, but it is pretty much Dr. Who and a bunch of DC’s C-listers hanging out and traveling through time, so zany should be the default gear.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow got off to a slow start, but there is lots of promise for the future, and it is the closest thing we are going to get to the Justice League on TV for quite some time, so I will be watching with great interest.  I just hope in the end of the show they don’t just give up and kill Vandal Savage before he gains his immortality like they should have from the start.
