Shmee Accepts Rogue Nation’s Mission Impossible!

rogue-nation-mission-impossible

I don’t know if you know this, but Tom Cruise keeps doing the movies called Mission: Impossible, and the fifth one came out last year!  That’s right there have been five Mission: Impossible movies with the latest one being subtitled Rogue Nation.  Mission: Impossible is a series that I enjoy, but I keep forgetting about until the next one comes out.  I don’t think Rogue Nation is going to change that.  Still good, but not super memorable.

Once again Ethan Hunt has been disavowed by his government, and he is out on his own hunting a country-less spy organization known as the Syndicate (no marks for creativity).  Well he is on his own until he decides he needs the rest of the IMF’s help anyway, and they go on a globe spanning adventure to track down and put an end to this Rogue Nation.

Honestly the stories for the Mission: Impossible movies have always kind of been what has been holding them back from being a top tier action franchise.  They are fine, but pretty generic.  Luckily the action set pieces and the high-tech breaking and entering always keep them entertaining, and there is nothing wrong with being a good popcorn flick.

These movies also serve to remind us that Tom Cruise is pretty good at what he does.  A likable man of action.  He is charismatic and charming on film, and that adds a lot to MI:RN. Rebecca Ferguson the female lead of Rogue Nation was great too.  It was nice to have someone in this movie that was every bit Hunt’s match, and someone who’s allegiances we were never quite sure of.  Apparently Paramount thought she was good too, so they are bringing her back for the sixth film.  Yes there are going to be at least six Mission: Impossible movies.

To wrap-up Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation was a solid action movie and it is worth a watch.  It has talented people spying on stuff, shooting things and driving real fast.  All stuff I enjoy, and I bet you will enjoy it too.  Though I doubt it will be anyone’s favorite movie.

My Overview Of The Overwatch Beta!

overwatch

Like just about everyone else this weekend I played a little of the Overwatch beta, and it was a ton of fun.  That being said I am still a little hesitant about this title.  Why?  It is multiplayer only and there isn’t a huge verity of game modes.  I feel like I just need something else to feel better about dropping $60 on this game.  Maybe if I was getting the PC version for $40 I could better justify it, but $60 for a Team Fortress 2 clone?  That is hard to pull the trigger on.  Especially since TF2 is free.

Should I feel this way though?  I mean Blizzard has done an amazing job with this game, and it is so well balanced and smooth it is a joy to play.  Not only that if you are like me and not great at competitive shooters there are so many hero types that you can find one that you are good with and be a help to your team.  Building turrets, healing players, handing out armor, or just being a big guy and absorbing bullets.  So you know TF2, but a little different.

I think Overwatch lists that there are like five game modes, but they all are pretty much go and either defend a location or attack a location.  It is just that sometimes you have to escort the location around.  Not that I am complaining too much since that is fun, I just wish that there was something else.  Like the single-player/co-op form Battleborn.  If I could somehow merge Battleborn with Overwatch I think I would have created the greatest game of all time, but I can’t.

Overwatch is a lot of fun, and it is polished to perfection.  Which I think should be enough, but I still find myself wanting more.  I guess we gamers are spoiled these days, but I want what I want, and I want more.

Shmee Watched Captain America: Winter Soldier 2 … Uhh Sorry … Civil War!

After months of hype Captain America: Civil War is finally in theaters, and I don’t know who brought the Russo brothers in to start directing the Captain America movies, but that person was a genius.  After a good-but-great Avengers movie Disney needed a big hit to prove that their Marvel mojo was still working, and Captain America: Civil War delivered in a big way.

Civil War takes place not long after Age of Ultron, with Cap and the gang out hunting bad guys as an elite fighting force.  When things go a little sideways on a mission people start calling for the Avengers to be reined in.  Surprisingly Tony Stark is one of those people.  As you can guess from all the artwork and advertising Steve Rodgers disagrees.  Neither of those gentlemen are very good at articulating their viewpoints so they decide to fight it out.

Honestly not to get too spoilery, but Civil War is probably an overstatement of what happens in this movie.  In the end it focuses more on Cap’s buddy Bucky than whether or not superheroes need a UN leash or not.  Which isn’t a bad thing, and it does make this more of a Captain America movie than an Avengers movie.  Just unlike the last Captain America movie it doesn’t have the, “Hey where are the Avengers?” problem.  Also since it forces the heroes to face it off it gets around Marvel’s growing lack of interesting villains problem.

It was also nice that while it built on previous movies Civil War was its own thing and not a giant advertisement for movies coming down the pike.  Sure it did get the ball rolling for the Black Panther and Spider-Man movies, but not in an over the top way.  More in a, “Hey aren’t these guys cool, and don’t you want to see more of them?!” kind of way.  Yes they are, and yes we do.  My wife loved Spider-Man.

Judging by the box-office results you are all going to see Captain America: Civil War without my approval, but that is fine.  It is a good movie, and it is worth seeing.  I hope they can find a way to inject this much life in to the rest of their franchise movies because I don’t know if I can sit through another Avengers: Age of Ultron after Civil War has shown me how good the Marvel movies can be.

Han Solo Is Dead! Long Live Han Solo! The New Han Solo Has Been Cast!

alden-ehrenreich

Looks like the casting of the new young Han Solo has been completed, and it is Alden Ehrenreich.  Apparently Disney filed through just about every actor between 20 and 30 to find their man.  Looking through his credits the only thing I have seen him in was Supernatural ten years ago…oh and Beautiful Creatures…, meaning he would have been just 15 or 16 for Supernatural and everyone phoned it in for Beautiful Creatures, so it is safe to say I have no opinion about him either way.  He will just need to grow his hair out a bit.

Despite my lack of knowledge of him he has been on the upswing with movies like Stoker, Blue Jasmin, and Hail Caesar!  And young barely known yet talented indie actors are a Star Wars casting staple.  According to rumors we may catch a glimpse of him in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.  I am guessing if we do he will be in some seedy bar with our favorite Wookiee friend.

I am not a huge fan of prequel origin stories, but I do wish him the best, and I hope he does Han Solo proud come May 2018.

Why Hasn’t Season 2 Of Supergirl Been Announced? Money!

supergirl

Supergirl had quite the year.  It started off slow and way to cheesy, but it ended up being my favorite superhero show.  However, despite solid but not great ratings CBS has not yet decided to pick up the show for a second season because they feel it is too expensive, and they want Warner Brothers to slash the budget.  Of course with the current budget the special effects on Supergirl have still been dodgy at times, so Warner Brothers doesn’t want make them any worse.

The Wrap is saying that if Warner Brothers does have to cut the budget that they would want to move the show to the CW were they would have more control over the future of the series, and so they could further integrate the Girl of Steel in to the Arrowverse.  Though both sides like the show on a major network, so getting it renewed on CBS is still plan ‘A’.

I honestly don’t care either way as long as Supergirl comes back next year.  While I like the higher production values CBS’s money brings to the table, The Flash crossover proved how much fun it would be to have Kara in the Arrowverse.  Maybe there could be some sort of Crisis on say multiple Earths to make her a permanent Earth One resident?  The end of May is quickly approaching, so we will not have to wait too much longer to find out Supergirl’s fate.
