You Should Buy Overwatch!

overwatch

You should totally buy Overwatch.  I know I keep saying it is overpriced, but I have decided that for something this well balanced and fun, I was wrong.  It is totally worth the $60.  Though if you are going to buy it on PC get the $40 version.  The extra skins don’t make the game worth $20 more, and I think that was my hang up for buying Overwatch for consoles.  We didn’t get the option to spend less for things we don’t need, or that we will earn anyway as the game progresses.

Still there is definitely well more than enough gameplay to justify the asking price, and every time I get a little bored I switch characters and the game completely changes.  Even with 21 starting heroes none of them are throwaways.  Well maybe Bastion, I am not one of those people that think he is too overpowered, but it is just that sitting in one place and not doing anything is not fun.  Sure at some point you will probably get one epic kill streak with a shot a getting the ‘Play of the Game’, but it is a long wait.

What is even more astonishing is that I am having fun playing this game without my friends.  None of them have picked it up yet, so I have been left to play this game with random strangers.  Normally this would be the death of a multiplayer game for me, but I am having a blast without them!  The game is just that good.  Blizzard has made yet another classic, and I hope that they keep adding to this wonderful game.  Who knew that the studio who conquered MOBAs (Heroes of the Storm), CCGs (Hearthstone), ARPGs (Diablo), MMOs (World of Warcraft), and RTSs (StarCraft) would be so good at FPSs as well.  I wonder what genre they will tackle next.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Is In Trouble?

Star-Wars-Rogue-One

Apparently, according to Page 6, Disney Execs are in a panic because Rogue One: A Star Wars Story isn’t testing well, and the movie is undergoing extensive reshoots.  Disney of course is saying that reshoots are part of any major blockbuster, and they just want to make the film as good as possible, but with only about six months left until the movie comes out that doesn’t leave a lot of time for shooting, editing and added special effects.

Granted Disney is a on a bit a hot streak with their flicks, so I am inclined to cut them a little slack, and saying a movie is in trouble will get your site more hits than saying everything is just peachy-keen, but Disney is cutting it close, so hopefully these reshoots are tweaks and not entirely new scenes.  I guess we only have to wait a few months to find out how things will turn out, but I have my fingers crossed because that first trailer was pretty great!

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Does Live Action Trailers Right!

I usually don’t like live action video game trailers.  They don’t show the action properly, and like with Halo 5 none of what they show represents anything that happens in the game.  Thankfully Deus Ex: Mankind Divided went a different route.  Instead of showing live action versions of the heroes and villains they made like a little mini-movie that sets up the universe you are going to play the game in.  It lets you see the fear and disorder that the last game caused.  It is sad and moving, while getting me excited to play in that world, so bravo Deus Ex: Mankind Divided marketing team you made a live action trailer work!

What Are The DC Shows On The CW Up Too?!

the-flash

I am watching the season finales of the CW’s DC shows and I have to wonder what the heck is going on!  I am not one to reveal spoilers, and I am not going to start now, but I am super confused.  I guess I will have to watch next year to find out, but I am not happy with the way things are going.  With the exception of the fact that Legends of Tomorrow finally uttered the words, “Justice Society of America”.  It was one of the best things ever said on television.  Plus Supergirl is pretty darn great, so hopefully she can be pretty darn great with all of her friends on the CW and fix this mess our superheroes are creating for themselves.

Battleborn Shows Why Focused Marketing Is Important!

Battleborn

When Battleborn was announced, Gearbox CEO and founder Randy Pitchford used just about every gaming buzz word to describe it:

Nobody knew or knows now what that means.  Randy is a pretty funny guy.  I have heard him speak many times at PAX, so this may have just been a joke, but the problem is that Battleborn’s marketing never made it any clearer.  We were just left to wonder what the heck Battleborn was.  Once the game got closer to release we learned that it was really just a MOBA with a CO-OP story mode attached.

Had they hyped and explained that, maybe it wouldn’t have been unfairly compaired with Blizzard’s Overwatch.  The two games aren’t even in the same genre, but Battleborn’s poor marketing lead people to believe that they were, or at least that the MOBA aspects of Battleborn were just a small part of it, not almost the entire game.  Due to this confusion we almost can’t talk about Battleborn or Overwatch without mentioning the other one.  Which is unfortunate.

If we are comparing games to Battleborn, the games we should be bringing up are Gigantic by Motiga or Paragon by Epic.  Overwatch on the other hand should be compared with Splash Damage’s Dirty Bomb, or Valve’s TF2 (though mostly Dirty Bomb).  Comparing Battleborn and Overwatch’s similar art styles may be interesting, but that is about it.

I understand why this happened, Gearbox’s fans for the most part aren’t big MOBA players and the company didn’t want to scare them off, but had they been honest about what they were making maybe they could have drawn some new fans in.  Instead nobody understood what was going on with Battleborn until it was too late.  I hear if you like MOBA’s, Battleborn is a fun take, but for straight up shooter fans it is a bit of a let down.  I can’t help but think all of this could have been prevented if Gearbox’s marketing department would have advertised their game properly.
