Feel Safe With The Brooklyn Nine-Nine!

Brooklyn99K_Gunrange-1

The Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a sitcom about a group of dysfunctional cops working in the 99th Precinct.  It is made by Universal Television and airing on Fox.  I had my doubts about this show due to the fact Andy Samberg can get annoying, but he works well in this show, and it is probably the best new sitcom on TV.  The Golden Globes seemed to agree, giving this show two statues.

Samberg plays Detective Jake Peralta who is quite immature, but surprisingly effective at catching bad guys.  He is always competing against the also effective Detective Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero).  The show starts when the new captain, Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) takes over the precinct, and he tries to get everything back under control much to the chagrin of Peralta.

The reason this show works is that while Samberg is definitely the star, the rest of the characters stand on their own, and they are able to carry on a conversation that is not about Peralta.  Since Samberg can be very irritating, it is nice that the show doesn’t completely lean on him, and gives us a break from his antics.

Now having good sub-characters only works if the cast is good, and the people making Brooklyn Nine-Nine really put together a great one.  Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, and Joe Lo Truglio probably all could have had their own shows, so to get them to lend their talents to this show was quite an impressive piece of cast directing.

With all the cop shows on TV these days, the idea to make sitcom out of one was a brilliant idea.  It plays off everything we know about police procedurals, and it gives Fox another winning comedy.  If you need a laugh brought to you by a talented cast and crew, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine might just be what you are looking for.  I haven’t regretted tuning in yet.

A Giant Week For DC!

DC-entertainment

I rant about DC comics a lot, but since last time I checked this is my blog, so I am going to do it again today!  The reason for this is that there is a lot of exciting news going around, and I had to give my opinion on all of it.  Lets start with the movie news shall we?

Justice League Movie!

So the current rumor from the website Latino Review is that they will be filming a Justice League film directly after they get done filming Batman vs Superman, and that they are talking to Dwayne Johnson to be John Stewart, one of the cooler Green Lanterns, or possibly some other character, so Cyborg.  This makes a ton of sense since they could spend a lot money, but get two films out of the deal much like The Hobbit, and it would help them catch up to Marvel.  If this is true expect to see a lot of casting rumors in the next few weeks.

It is kind of scary to think that DC is finally getting its movie act together, but this is a large step in the right direction.  If they do this right we will get to see all our favorite DC heroes, but not have to sit through any more origin stories!  What a wonderful future that would be.  Now on to TV news!

Even More TV Shows!

In an earlier rant I talked about the three new DC TV shows in the works: Hourman, The Flash, and a Gotham Cop Show.  Well those are all still on the docket, with the exception that the Gotham cop show is now pretty much Batman Smallville, curse you Fox!  A cop show in Gotham sounded interesting, but a bunch of brooding teenagers fighting each other in high school sounds awful, but maybe it will turn out (it won’t).  I have my fingers crossed!

They also announced this week that NBC is ordering a Constantine show, and since they have already done a good job with Hannibal, Dracula, and Grimm this could be a great fit.  Heck he could fight those guys, and it could be a lot of fun crossing over everything together in a large NBC/DC universe.  They won’t do that, but still it is fun to think about.  That was not the only TV announcement either.

AMC is ordering The Preacher from Sony Pictures Television, and Seth Rogan is producing.  I don’t know if that means it is going to be a comedy (please no, but maybe yes?), or that Rogan just likes The Preacher, so he is putting some skin in the game.  I hope it is the latter.  Either way I love the work AMC does, so I am very excited!

Now if you are counting, the success of Arrow has spawned not one but five TV shows: Gotham (Meh), The Flash, Hourman, Constantine, and The Preacher.  I guess DC decided that they couldn’t beat Marvel in the movie game, so instead they are going to win at TV.  Not a bad plan.  So that means maybe the people running DC are not total idiots.  We live in a brave new world, and I am extremely excited!

Shmee gets Wired!

wired_red

I don’t read a lot of thrillers, but I will give one a chance occasionally if it involves a lot of Sci-Fi or fantasy.  Wired the 2010 book by Douglas E. Richards has the former.  Its premise is that the human brain can be used to its full potential by using a series of viruses to reprogram it.

The story follows a former special forces operative named David Desh who is called out of retirement to capture a bio-terrorist.  As with all thrillers, things are not as they seem, and he might not be the one doing the hunting.  DUN DUN DUN!  Can he save the world before it is too late?

Like I said in the opening paragraph, I don’t read a lot of thrillers, mostly because I hate plot twists for the sake of plot twists, and thrillers tend to do that a lot.  This book does have a few twists and turns, but none of them felt forced, and Wired keeps the action turned up to eleven, so I can’t forgive a few minor story shifts.

It is well written, so apparently Richards knows his craft, and I didn’t see any glaring plot holes.  Well with the exception that the premise is probably false to begin with, but that has never stopped me from reading a book before.  I may have to check out his other work.

I got this book because it was free on the Kindle lending library, but I quite enjoyed myself.  I guess it is good to try something different every now and then.  Heck I may even have to check out Wired’s sequel Amped.

Manos: The Hands Of Felt?

Manoswebbanner

So you may remember MANOS: The Hands of Fate from a review I did earlier, which is one of the worst films of all time, well some crazy people made a puppet play out of it called MANOS: The Hands of Felt.  They are going to sell DVDs of the play, but since I backed it on Kickstarter, I got to download a copy earlier.  I mean how could I not, puppets and bad cinema mixed together and put on stage?  SHUTUP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

So the plot of the play is mostly the some as the movie, with the exception that the story follows the people making the movie who get lost and confused, so they are just kind of making up the movie as they go along while crazy stuff is happening.  Oh yeah, they are also all puppets, so that is a little different.  I am pretty sure that you should at least familiarize yourself with MANOS: The Hands of Fate before you watch this performance.

Granted this movie/play is for a select group of people that enjoy bad films and adore puppets, so pretty much me and all the people that backed the play on Kickstarter.  That would mean there at least 768 of us.  I am glad that their funding campaign was successful because even when it wasn’t making me laugh, it was making me smile.  You can tell they love crappy movies as much as I do, and it was a lot of fun to watch.

If you love puppets and bad movies you should look out for the DVD when it is released, so you can smile along with me.  I hope that the people of the puppet troupe Vox Fabuli continue to make funny puppet stuff, just so I know that there are people like me out in the world.

Sail The High Seas In Assassin’s Creed IV!

Assassins-Creed-4-Black-Flag-Full-HD-Wallpaper

It seems that the evenly numbered Assassin’s Creed games are the ones to play.  Assassin’s Creed I was interesting, but very flawed.  Assassin’s Creed II fixed most of the those flaws, and it ended up being the game we wanted the first time around.  Assassin’s Creed III was fine, but it was just more of the same, so it was hard to care and was boring.  Now with Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag they gave us the pirate game we have always wanted!

In the story you follow an eager young pirate Edward Kenway, who happens to be the father and grandfather of the protagonists in Assassin’s Creed III, and is not yet an Assassin.  Through a series of events he ends up joining their order and helping them to find yet another ancient artifact that can save the future.  In the present you work at a game company Abstergo Entertainment that is more then it seems.

Sadly the story is the probably the worst part of this game.  It is basically the same story from every Assassin’s Creed game with the exception that the main character is not really an Assassin.  He is just a jerky pirate that decided helping the Assassins would get him a little extra money.  Though that change is very welcome because at times he feels the same level of apathy about the Assassins that I do.

What makes this game awesome is the giant open Caribbean for you to explore and plunder.  You want to do battle with the English or Spanish and add their ships to your fleet?  By all means!  You want to hunt for whales or shoot helpless rare animals so you can make yourself cool gear?  You should do that!  You can even follow the main quest if you want, but the pirating is just fantastic.

Your pirate ship controls well, and there are a ton of upgrades to buy to make the Jackdaw the most formidable sea going vessel in the ocean. To upgrade it you will need to board ships and take their plunder, so you can earn money with their rum and sugar, or gather materials like wood, cloth, and metal.   Every time you take a ship, you can either use it to repair the Jackdaw, coerce the enemy’s crew to reduce your wanted level, or add it to your fleet.

If you add them to your fleet, there is a mini game where you send your boats on trading missions, and they bring back money and treasures.  It is a fantastic little time waster, and if your friends have the game they can help your fleet along its way.  This game also fuels your need to take bigger ships, so they can take more cargo across the world.

The on land parts of this game are pretty much the same as in all other Assassin’s Creed games, but they have continued to refine it, so it is a good change of pace from shooting enemy Man O’ Wars in Tortuga.  There are a ton of missions to do, and treasure to find, so you shouldn’t run out of stuff to do on dry land.

This game has a multiplayer mode, but I am not very good at it, and it never was that interesting to me.  If that is your thing though it does add even more value to an already massive and worthwhile game.  If they add a ship versus ship mode that would be awesome, but there isn’t one as of yet.

The graphics range from amazing to awful depending on what you are doing.  If your ship is in the middle of a storm with whales jumping around it looks stunning.  If your character is just randomly talking to another character it can look quite dated.  This is no doubt due to it being port of a previous generation game.

I really enjoy this game, and if they can ever create a story that I can care about then it looks like the future is bright for the Assassin’s Creed games.  For now however, you can find me pillaging the high seas because Assassin’s Creed IV got its hooks in me.
