I Visit Castlevania!

Netflix is really doing everything in its power to make sure it has all its bases covered.  It has been busy licensing a lot of anime, and with Voltron and recently Castlevania, it is making some of its own.  Both series are quite good.  Voltron for the family viewers and Castlevania for the hardcore crowd.  Castlevania’s issue may be that it is too over-the-top.  It is a non-stop gore-fest.

If you remember anything about the games, you will be at home here.  Dracula (Graham McTavish) has gone off the deep end, and only Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage) can stop him.  There is more to it, but the beginning is the most shocking part of the series, so I don’t want to spoil it.

Adi Shankar’s fingerprints are all over Castlevania.  Every scene drips with blood and violence.  It holds nothing back.  If you have seen his Dredd shorts on YouTube.com, you will know what you are in for.  You can tell he has been dying to make something like this for a long time.  It is almost a shame fellow producer and primary financier Fred Seibert (Frederator Networks, Inc.) couldn’t restrain him a little.

The voice acting is all well done.  Armitage and McTavish are particularly great.  You can feel their apathy and disgust with the world.  The backup actors are good too.  Filling in their little pieces of the world.

I can only recommend Castlevania to a small group of people.  People who know what Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is, and love it.  This is like the American version of that, but with Castlevania’s lore, and buckets of animated blood.  If that interests you, the series is only four short episodes long, so it is worth a view.  I liked it, but I also love Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

Freeform Is Finally Getting A Show I Am Interested In, The New Warriors!

There are so many comic book TV shows out there now.  Though for a while it seemed that DC was destined to own broadcast TV while Marvel would just keep trucking along on Netflix (with the exception of Agents of SHEILD).  Not so!  Marvel is adding two new shows this year, Inhumans and their first comedy The New Warriors.

The internet is going nuts for The New Warriors because it will have Twitter favorite Squirrel Girl played by the AT&T Girl (Milana Vayntrub).

I guess she was in This Is Us too, but who watches that show.  Anyway, I have been hoping for a good superhero comedy, so I hope Freeform can pull it off.  Though if the internet has taught me anything, The Amazing Squirrel Girl can do whatever she sets her mind to (she beat Thanos once)!

Get In The Ring With GLOW!

Netflix continues to churn out the hits with GLOW.  It is hard to keep up with all the new programming that Netflix produces, but I think GLOW is worth paying attention to.  It is a fictionalized account of the creation the real G.L.O.W. which was on the air from 1986-1990, and the dramedy manages to be both funny and poignant.  Though I don’t think it will be for everybody.

Any time I watch historical fiction, I like to see if there is any truth to it, and sadly in GLOW’s case the story on screen is nothing like what really happened.  It is still really good, but just don’t expect to be an actual expert on G.L.O.W after watching GLOW.  In the Netflix Show’s case, it is about a group of struggling actresses trying to find work, and not just work, but also something other than playing secretaries and waitresses, so they go to a gym to give wrestling a try.  Of course no one takes them seriously.  Women’s wrestling in the 80’s was a joke, so they have to train hard while overcoming one obstacle after another.

The actors they got for GLOW are all top notch.  Alison Brie plays her role as Ruth, a ‘good girl’ learning to be a heel, perfectly.  Though with her resume that is hardly a surprise.  Then the rest of the ladies just come in and add more depth and character.  The few gents in this show deliver as well.

Since this show is by the creators of Orange is the New Black expect GLOW to be for adults only, and it takes a while for it to find its feet, but once it does it is very engaging.  Now I want to go out and watch some wrestling!  Just kidding, wrestling still isn’t my thing, but GLOW, a show about some ladies kicking butt in the 80’s, definitely was.

The New Star Wars Web Series Looks A Little Too Webby!

You remember when guys and gals were making web shorts in the late 90’s and early 2000’s?  That is what the new Star Wars: Forces of Destiny looks like.  It looks like somebody loaded up Adobe Animate and made some Flash films for their Star Wars fan fiction.  That doesn’t mean that I will not watch it.  I will.  It just looks like they could have put a little more effort in to this short series.  Especially if it is the launch for a bunch of new toys and dolls.  I believe it is going to be the Star Wars version of the very successful DC Super Heroes Girls, which sounds good, but it looks like they could have tired harder.

Shmee Sets Sail On The Verdurous With Gargantia!

I have been jonesing for some anime, so I fired up ‘Gagantia on the Verdurous Planet’ on Netflix.  For the most part it had what I wanted: mecha, evil squid, and a post apocalyptic world filled with massive boats.  Pretty much Gargantia is the anime equivalent to Water World, but much more watchable.  Not great, but it did the trick for my neglected anime habit.

In the future the human race has left Earth and is at war for its survival against the strange squid like creatures the  Hideauze.  That is until one day a Machine Caliber (the show’s name for mechs) pilot, Ensign Ledo, is sucked through a wormhole and deposited on Earth, a planet he was told had been destroyed.  The world has gone through some changes, and it is now covered in water, so people live in massive flotillas and dredge up stuff from the ocean’s floor.  It is a difficult yet peaceful life, and not one Ledo is sure he can get used to.

‘Gagantia on the Verdurous Planet’ has all the usual stuff: a random fan service episode, questions about humanity, and teenagers taking on responsibilities that they shouldn’t, but it was still well made and engaging.  As a matter of fact I blew through it in a couple of days.  I wish there was another season or two.  Mecha Water World is just the sort of thing this anime freak is down with.

Now if you are looking for an anime that changes things up and pushes the boundaries of the medium, you will be disappointed.  Gargantia is an above average standard anime tale, but that was enough for me, and one that I think a lot of anime fans like myself would enjoy.  Plus it is on Netflix.  In other words, if you like anime give ‘Gagantia on the Verdurous Planet’ a shot, if you are burned out on anime, or just don’t like it, you can skip it.  Nothing new to see here.
