Cool Down With The Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo!

cooler-master-hyper-212-evo

Mrs. Shmee decided to help out my ongoing computer upgrade for Father’s Day, so she got me a new CPU fan.  It is the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo.  This fan fits a lot of chipsets, and it is reasonably priced, usually under $35, but is it any good?  Well for my purposes it was well worth the price.

It is pretty much a large light weight aluminum heat-sync with four copper pipes running through it.  It comes with one 120mm fan, but it has the brackets for one more if you decide that you need to move the air over your processor a little faster.  The mounting brackets are adjustable so that you can put it on just about any CPU made, and it was perfect for my AMD FX-8320.

It is a little tall and the fan makes it kind of fat, but my Lian-Li PC-9F case was wide enough to fit it, and my low rise G.SKILL Ares RAM didn’t bump in to it.  Though if you are going to buy one of these you definitely need to check out the dimensions of your case, and how your motherboard is laid out.

The 212 Evo is way quieter than the fan that came with the processor, and I was able to overclock the chip from 3.5GHz to 4GHz without increasing the voltage.  Even with the overclock, my CPU is running cooler than with the stock fan.  I could go probably go faster if I had a higher end motherboard, but 500MHz is nothing to sneeze at.  I torture tested the CPU and fan using Prime95 for several hours to confirm that my overclock was stable, and it passed with flying colors.  It was fun to see my chip run all eight cores flat out.

If your stock fan is not cutting it for your processer, the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo is a great upgrade.  It doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, but it will run quiet and even let you overclock your chip a little.  I am quite happy with mine, and I think you will like it too.

Computer Hardware Tripple Shot!

I am continuing to slowly upgrade my computer (well actually pretty much replacing it), so the next three components I got, were the motherboard, RAM, and CPU.  First up lets talk about the foundation of it all the motherboard:

Asus M5A97 LE R2.0:

asus_m5a97_le_r2_0

After a bad experience with other board makers, I pretty much now only use Asus boards.  Their customer service is kind of lame if you ever do need to call them, but their parts are usually so good that you don’t have to anyway.  This board had exactly what I wanted: gigabit Ethernet, USB3 ports, a decent sound card, it supported the CPU I wanted, and it was cheap.  It ended up being even cheaper thanks to a rebate offer.

It has a great BIOS, which I updated as soon as it started up, that allows for complete control over all your components, and extremely easy overclocking tools.  What I liked about this thing is that it just worked the way I wanted it to out of the box.  I didn’t need to play with anything, or toggle a setting, it just got my PC up and running.

The only downer is that it didn’t have a USB3 expansion port for the front of my case, but that wasn’t a feature I wanted to spend $20 on.  I installed this three weeks ago and it has been rock solid, so if you are looking for a good low-mid level gaming board for AMD processors, you should put this on your short list.

G.SKILL Ares Series 8GB SDRAM DDR3 1866:

G.Skill Ares 1866

I don’t have a lot to say here other then this is some pretty fast RAM.  I got the Ares version of the G.SKILL RAM family due to the fact it has low rise heat syncs, so I can put whatever components I want in my computer, and I don’t have to worry about them running in to the giant RAM chips sticking out of my MoBo.  Like all DDR3 RAM chips that function above 1333 MHz, I did have select the 1866 MHz speed in my BIOS, but other then that they have been completely trouble free.  I have never had problems with G.SKILL RAM, and it looks like that is still the case.

AMD FX8320:

AMD-FX8320

Everyone that builds a mid-range gaming computer these days uses the Intel i5 series processors because they are fast, and they don’t consume a lot of power.  I however am an AMD fanboy from way back, so I will take the hit in power costs, and a little hit in single threaded processing power to use an AMD chip.  If you don’t care who makes your chips you should probably use an Intel i5, but if you do get an FX-8320 you will still be very happy.

It is fast enough, it has eight cores, and it is unlocked so you can overclock it as much as you feel comfortable with.  In just playing around, I got this chip to over 4.1 GHz without too much effort.  I didn’t leave it at that speed because I still only have to stock cooler, and didn’t want to burn it up, but when I do get a better cooler I will have this chip clocked well over the 3.5 GHz stock clock speed.

And I will totally be getting a better cooler.  The stock cooler is fine when the computer isn’t working hard, but once you start doing something fun it sounds like a hoover vacuum cleaner.  I suppose they just throw in a cooler to make it a complete set, but they must know guys like me will not use them for long anyway, so why bother including something good.  Still the chip is cheap at under $150, so even with the price of a decent cooler, you still haven’t spent $200 yet, and that is a pretty good deal.

There are my three computer hardware mini reviews, and I hope you found them somewhat useful.  I still have a cooler, and a video card to go to finish this computer off, and I will let you all know how it goes!

Shmee Gets A New Computer Case: The Lian-Li PC-9F!

Lian-Li PC-9F

I have been on a very slow computer rebuild train, so recently I decided to get a new case to put all my new components in.  After quite a bit of researching, I chose the Lian-Li PC-9F Black Aluminum Mid-Tower case (rolls right off the tongue).  I love Lian-Li’s simple designs and quality manufacturing, but I was worried that their cases were too far out of my budget.  Thankfully the PC-9F is under a hundred dollars at most retailers, so not super cheap, but still a third the price of their other offerings.

I was concerned that since this case is at the low end of Lian-Li’s price range that the quality wasn’t going to be as good as their more expensive models, but I was presently surprised.  The case is lightweight yet sturdy, and all the edges are rolled, so you will not be spilling a lot of blood in this case.  It also comes pre-equipped with three large fans, so unless you are running some serious hardware in this thing, your kit will stay cool.  If still want your case cooler, there is an extra port on the top that you can open up for one more fan.

Like all good cases this one is completely aluminum (with the exception of some plastic snaps), and can be put together completely without tools.  You will still want to have your screw drivers and a pair pliers handy when you build your PC.  Some areas can be hard to reach once you get your stuff in the case, and sometimes things are too hard to untighten by hand.

If you are going to build a super PC with two or more video cards, water cooling, and all sorts of extra stuff you will probably want something else because I can see this case getting a little cramped with all that extra gear in it.  Though if you are spending that kind of money on your components, you should really spend a bit more on your case.  For most gamer computer builds though, this case should be more than adequate.

I really like this case.  It has a simple clean look, and since the computer I am building isn’t anything extra special it suits my needs perfectly.  I am very happy that Lian-li built a case for the everyday computer gamer with the PC-9F, and not just the ultra high end.

Five Favorite Apps For Windows Phone!

Windows-Phone-7_8

With the arrival of Windows Phone 8.1, I thought it would be fun to list my five favorite apps for Windows Phone.  Well at least the five apps that I use all the time, so here they are in reverse order (links to the apps are in the titles):

5: Calculator³

calculator3

Windows Phone comes with a calculator, but it doesn’t come with a scientific calculator that also does currency/unit conversion, calculate tips and tax based on saved amounts, and more.  This is a great app.  It is worth the buck fifty they charge, but if you are cheap you can get the free ad supported Calculator².

4: HERE Drive +

HERE drive plus

It is no secret that Nokia makes great hardware, but the real reason to get a Nokia Windows Phone is all apps they make for it.  The crown jewel of their app catalog is HERE Drive +.  It is one of the best turn by turn navigation apps made, and if you are a Nokia user, you get it for free.  Though the big news out of BUILD this year is that they are going to give this away to all Windows Phone users in the future!

3: Halo: Spartan Assault

Halo-Spartan-Assault

Every smart phone needs games, so if it is a smart phone made by Microsoft it had better have Halo.  Halo: Spartan Assault isn’t perfect, but it s a fun diversion, and it is always going on sale.  Now that all Windows Phones have Cortana, you should have the Master Chief as well.

2: MetroTube

metrotubeWatching YouTube.com on Windows Phone 8.1 got better due to in-page viewing, but if you are going to watch a lot of YouTube.com than MetroTube has got you covered.  It allows you to download movies, and add them to favorites.  Plus it is just easier to navigate then the browser.  It costs a dollar, but the “free trial” is unlimited, so you don’t “have” to pay for it.  Still, I think the devs have earned their money.

1: Amazing Weather HD

Amazing Weather HD

There are like fifteen million weather apps for Windows Phone, but Amazing Weather HD is the best.  It has all the info you could ever need in a weather app.  Plus it looks great with hi-res pictures, and customizable Live Tiles.  It has a free trial, but I have never regretted the dollar and a half I spent on this wonderful app.

Bonus For Web Admins: Analytics Client

analytics client

If you have a website, you are going to want to know how many people are looking at it.  Analytics Client gives me all the information I need, and it is free.  There are prettier Google Analytics viewers, but this one is fast, and it shows me just what I need.

Good App In The Dog House: MyFitnessPal

myfitnesspal

I used this app to loose a lot of weight, but they updated their app last year, and now it stops working all the time.  They have forced me to just pin their site to my Start Screen and ignore the app altogether.  If they fix their app it is the best calorie counter out there, but for now stay away, or just use the site like me.

That is my list, plus a couple extras.  I hope you found it useful!

Windows Phone 8.1 Is Out!

windows-phone8.1

If you have been following tech news at all then you have been hearing about “Cortana”.  The new virtual assistant for Windows Phone that comes with the 8.1 update, but you may have also heard that that you will have to wait until “summer” to get that update, well you heard wrong.  You can get the update now if you sign up for the “Developer Preview”.

To get the “Developer Preview” just follow these steps:

1: Sign up for a free account here: http://appstudio.windowsphone.com/ with the same email address you use for your Microsoft Account.

2: Then download this app: Preview for Developers

3: Open the App and sign in with your account, and check the box that you want to get the updates.

4: Go to “Settings” -> “Phone Updates” -> “Check for Updates”

There should be two updates.  A really small one that takes like ten minutes to install, and a big one that will take up to forty-five minutes to install.  It is worth the wait.  Remember even though this is called a “Preview” this is the final 8.1 code not a beta, and you will never have to uninstall it.  You will just continue to get updates before everyone else.

There are several major additions to the Windows Phone operating system:

Cortana

She is pretty much a merge of Google Now and Siri.  She has seemed to work well so far, and it is very nice to be able to control my phone with natural speech or text.  She will now live on your phone’s search button, or in her App.  Never fear if you just want to search, type or say it in and she will still look it up.  She will just do her best to tailor the search to your interests and behaviors.  Pretty much she makes Bing smarter, and that is a good thing.

Notification Center

This has taken waaaaay too long to come out to Windows Phone, and while it hasn’t always been seen as needed thanks to Live Tiles.  It is great to get all your important updates in one place.  To access the Notification Center just swipe down on the top of your phone.

Start Screen backgrounds

Again this is something that should have been around awhile, but now in addition to your lock screen pictures, you can have a picture be the background for your Tiles.  It is a small thing that makes a major difference.  It makes the phone feel more like your own.

VPNs

Are you using this phone for work, or you just want to control your home network? Then you can connect your phone to the VPN to gain access to file shares, control servers, or just play around with stuff.  They have also opened up the VPN API, so programmers can make custom VPN apps for specific routers and whatnot.

More Live Tile Space

You used to have to have a 1080p screen to get another column of tiles, but you can now flip a switch in the appearance settings to give yourself more room.  This is great for packing in just a little more info in to your Start Screen.  Again this is a small thing that is much appreciated.

Better Default Apps

The default Windows Phone apps like the Camera and Maps have gotten a huge update.  The Camera is way better, and I like it now more than the Nokia one.  Bing maps can now download and save offline map data, so you are not using data when using Bing for navigation.  This perfect for phone plans with small data caps.

Multitasking

This is one that I am so-so on.  Apps can now stay running even when you back out of them.  The new Facebook App does this.  This is great for apps you use all the time, but if you are not ready for it they can drain the crap out of your battery, so be sure to hold the back button and check to see if you have any running apps from time to time.

Installing Apps To SD Cards

This is big deal to anyone that has a budget Windows Phone like a Lumia 520.  You can now buy a giant SD card and install your apps to it to save space.  Just be sure to buy a fast card, so those apps load quickly.

There are so many updates in Windows Phone 8.1 that I am sure that I am missing something you will find important, but the real gist is that you should update your phone to 8.1 as soon as you can.  It is great, and since you can do it for free and there are very few hoops to jump through, there is no reason to wait.
