1 Year and 300 Posts!

One-Year-Old-Candle

On January 24th 2013 Shmee.me went live.  I had friends with blogs, so it seemed like it would be something fun to try.  I had no idea that I would make it a full year, or that I would produce over 300 posts, but here we are.  I would like to thank you all for reading my blog, and making it at huge (at least huge for me) success.

It has been a pretty productive year for me.  Besides the 300 posts, I also wrote a book, and I lost a ton of weight, but this year looks to be even better since a Shmee Jr. is on the way.  Exciting times for Mr. and Mrs. Shmee for sure.

When I first started this blog I was happy to get twenty unique views a day, but now I am upset if I don’t get twenty unique views by breakfast.  I also now get more of my traffic from outside my home country the good ol’ USA.  I have a surprisingly large European following, so thank you to all my followers from around the world.

My most popular pages are:  My thoughts on who should play Wonder Woman, though Warner Bros didn’t take my advice and cast a different Princess Diana of Themyscira;  Why I like Community more than The Big Bang Theory; And my review of the last Breaking Bad episode.  It still bums me out that it is over.  Conversely no one reads my book reviews, but I am still going to write them because this my blog and you all should read more.

Once again I would like to thank the over four thousand of you that have come and checked out my site.  I hope that number grows even more next year.  If there is ever anything that you would like me to write about please leave a comment somewhere, I promise I read them all.

Yes I Am Promoting Bing Rewards!

new-bing-logo-1

I generally don’t promote services like Bing Rewards very often because they are lame and annoying, but I thought I would mention it because Microsoft does pay your to use their search engine.  Not a lot, but enough that it got me to use Bing for at least part of the day.  You can earn up to fifteen points a day by searching on the site, and you can redeem the points for things like Amazon gift cards.  Once you are a full member you can get a $5 gift card for 475 points, so a point is worth right about a penny.

The real reason I am doing this is because for every member I get signed up I get 200 points.  A lot of people I know hate Bing, but still use this program because they like free stuff as much as I do, so what they do is they have a favorites folder with 30 Bing searches in it, and they just open them all and get their points in like a second.  I can’t officially support that since it breaks the terms of service, but it works.

If this is some thing you are interested in click here, and I promise I won’t do too many more posts like this in the future.  My lust for free stuff compels me!

Learning To Live With MyFitnessPal!

myfitnesspal

I have known that I needed to lose weight for quite some time, but I never had the motivation to do it until I needed to drop a few pounds to go Zip Lining in Kauai.  I thought about what diets I might try, but I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on classes and books, I just wanted to control my eating, so I did what all 21st Century People do, I checked to see if there was an app for that, and low and behold there was.  It was MyFitnessPal.

MyFitnessPal is a website that helps you track your caloric intake, but besides the site they have apps for just about every smart phone type out there.  Say you want to eat a Subway sandwich, you would just type the sub you got in to the search bar, pick the one with options you got, and add it to the meal you are eating it for.  It is that easy, and they have tons of menus and meals in their database, and more people are adding to it all the time, so you can search for just about anything and find it.  Plus they have a barcode scanner, so you can just scan your pack of chips you shouldn’t be eating and it pops right up.

When you first start it asks you for your height, weight, weight goal, age, birthdate, gender, and most importantly how much weight you want to lose per week, so that it can setup calorie limits for you.  If you go over your limit you get to see by how many calories, and it will also yell at you if you have had too few calories as well, so that you are not getting too aggressive on your diet.

It also tracks your other nutrients, so you can make sure that you are not eating to much sodium and bloating away all your weight loss, or to make sure you are still getting your vitamins.  If you really want that ice cream sundae, you can plug in your exercise to add calories to your available daily intake.

MyFitnessPal also has social hooks to make it in to kind of a social network.  For me it is a social network of one.  I let my wife see and that is it, but it is good to have some accountability.

Like all calorie counters it only works if you use it, and sometimes I kind of look like a jerk when I pull out my phone to see if I have enough calories to eat something, but it is for my greater health.  Will it work for you?  Probably, and it has definitely worked for me: I have lost 25lbs and counting.  Not bad for a free app, so I don’t care if they are selling my info it is more than worth it.

Kauai Wrap-Up!

kee_beach

As many of you may have noticed, Shmee.me has been silent as of late, and that is because I have been on vacation, and as you may have seen in the title I was/am in Kauai.  It has been a great trip to the Garden Island, and I am going to give you some “Best of”s.

Best Snorkeling: Ke’e Beach

Ke’e beach is great (pictured above)!  Tons of sand and shade, plus it has a large protective reef around it, so it is safe to swim in.  The reef is full of fish and coral, and for the most part is only waist deep, so being a strong swimmer is not necessary.  The fish are used to people, so they come right up to you and beg for food like dogs, but sadly for them, I am cheap and never brought any food.

Fun story about one of our trips to Ke’e.  We went there on stormy day and there were twenty foot swells beyond the reef, but some ocean kayakers decided it would be a good place to come in at, and like most times when you make a mistake: you pay for it.  They got pummeled against the reef, but luckily they paid for their ignorance with cuts and bruises and a good story, but they gave the life guards a good scare.

The beach is easy to find since it is literally at the end of the highway. Just head north and when the road stops you are there.

Best Adventure: Princeville Ranch Adventures: Zip and Dip

This was my first time zip-lining, but it probably will not be my last.  It was a blast!  There are nine zip-lines, and towards the end there is a nice swimming hole to cool off in with a small ledge to jump off.

The guides were a ton of fun, and kept everyone in good spirits.  The views as the guides put it are Jurassic Park, and Tropic Thunder, but after the long hot day of hiking and zipping, the lagoon to swim in was the best part.

Best Fish Taco: Happy Taco

Happy Taco is a truck in Kapa’a, but their fish tacos are wonderful.  With big chunks of ahi tuna, and some sort of sauce all for $3, and if you get two, you get free rice and beans!

Best Restaurant with a View: The Beach House

The view from The Beach House is unreal, and all the surfers coming in with the sun setting it doesn’t get more Hawaii than that.  Duke’s was in the running and it may have had better food, but if you want a view with your expensive tropical drink (well expensive everything really), there is none better than The Beach House.

Best (And Only) Luau: Smith’s Family Luau

This award isn’t fair since it is the only Luau we went too, but food was really good, and they put on a decent show.  I only wish that they had better seats for the show because the padded bleachers get uncomfortable real quick, especially after I stuffed myself on the all you can eat buffet and bar.

Best Surf: Hanalei Bay

The surf in Hanalei is perfect.  The waves keep coming in just like clockwork.  Not to big, and not to small.  Though every now and then a monster wave would come in and destroy me, but it is part of the fun, and a good way to prove the worth of my Waviator floating sunglasses!  The rip tide can be strong here, so don’t go too far out in to the water unless you are a strong swimmer.

Best Tourist Trap: Hanalei Town

My wife loved it there and it is easy to see why. Cute shops and restaurants all framed in by Kauai’s famous giant cliffs.  My wife would love to spend our next trip to Kauai exclusively in this little town.  I have no objections (my wallet might).

Best Hiking: Everywhere

HA! I have no reviews on Kauai’s legendary hiking because if you know me, you that hiking is not a thing that I like to do, but if you are a hiker you will have fun in Kauai, but I would rather be snorkeling, but to each their own I suppose (but I am in the right here).

It was a wonderful trip, and it saddens me to leave it tomorrow, but as they say absence makes the heart grow fonder.  I just hope that it is not a long absence.

Support King Boogie!

**UPDATE: It was successfully funded!
My buddy N.D. Byma is using Kickstarter to fund a book.  He is close to his target goal, but he still needs a little help, so please head on over and take look or watch the video above and see if this is something you are interested in, or if you just want to help someone accomplish a dream.  His project is in the last day or so of funding, so any help you could give him I am sure he would appreciate.
