No More Ryan Reynolds in Comic Book Movies!

Ryan_reynolds

Can we please just stop with Ryan Reynolds!  I recently put up five dudes that I would like to be the next Batman, and coincidently while at O’Reilly’s auto-parts I heard a lady say something horrifying, “They should make Ryan Reynolds the new Batman, he would be fun!”  NO, NO he would not!

Look Ryan Reynolds is a good looking fella, and he has decent comedic timing, but I think he should just stick to the comedy genre.  He has already killed enough comic book movies.  Don’t believe me?  Here is the list: Blade: Trinity, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Green Lantern, and as of right now R.I.P.D.  Now I have not seen R.I.P.D, and given the reviews, I don’t plan on it, but I have seen the other three and they are incredibly bad, and with his latest failure he has killed a franchise from, DC, Marvel, and now Dark Horse.  That is the three of the big four right there!

Now you could be saying, “Those movies would have been bad without Reynolds!”  Maybe so, but we have no way of knowing.  What I do know is that he has tried four times to make it in comic book movies and all of them have been disasters, and he as been awful in all four movies.  I don’t care how attractive he is or that he has some charisma: he is super hero poison, Kryptonite has nothing on Ryan Reynolds.  He has now lost hundreds of millions of dollars for movie studios.

If he is cast as Batman someone is going to get shot, and that is probably not an exaggeration.  There are millions of comic book fans and some of us are a little unhinged.  Luckily I am pretty sure the lady at the auto-parts store doesn’t work for Warner Bros, she is just from Vancouver and trying to push the local talent, so we should be safe, but still it is a terrifying thought.

You’re Not Shackled To Your Phone’s Ecosystem!

One thing I hear regularly is when someone says, “I would love to use a phone on platform ‘X’, but I am tied to the apps and ecosystem on platform ‘Y'”.  It is kind of a shame too because if the phone that person really wants is on platform ‘X’, they are missing out, and they don’t need too.

Most people use about five third party apps daily and of those they probably only paid for three, meaning the apps that are tying them to their phone are worth probably less than five dollars.  Now I know at this point a lot of you are saying “I have way more than five apps!”, and you probably do, but how many could you live without?  And how many could you get for free on your new platform?  If you had to get different ones that did the same thing would that be okay?

I think the biggest thing that bugs me about people thinking they are tied to an old platform, if that if that is the case the company that makes that platform now owns them, and can control their buying habits, and the companies that make phones are huge, and do not necessarily want what is best for you, they just want your cash.  Don’t let Microsoft, Google, or Apple think they have got you for life.

If you are happy with phone you have, and platform it is on, then I am happy for you!  I don’t care what kind of phone you want or have, as long as it is what you want.  I just don’t like the fact that people think they are tied down to something that they may not like.  You can switch whenever you want, and if you ever want to go back the apps you have will be waiting for you.

I Like 3D In Movies, But It Still Needs To Go!

3D-glasses

I like 3D in movies.  One of my favorite movies from last year Dredd 3D was obviously in 3D, and it was fantastic, but it is time for the technology to move on.  It used to be fun and only on certain movies, but they recently tried to convince us that we needed to see The Great Gatsby in 3D.  It was a story about the 20’s for crying out loud.

Movies like Dredd and Avatar were meant to be seen in 3D because the directors thought about that process, and made them with 3D in mind, but most movies are not that way.  They take a 2D movie and post-process it to add the effect, and for the most part you can’t even tell except that the movie is fuzzy if you try and take your glasses off.  The only reason they do this is to jack the ticket price up, and since movies already cost north of $12 a ticket it is a little ridiculous.

If they only used 3D every now and then it would great and I would still be happy with the technology, but it has gone too far, and it is time for studios to do the right thing and reduce the amount of 3D movies they release.  It is too expensive and they are destroying their customer’s good will.

What Makes a Good Video Game?

I was thinking to my self what I would do to create the prefect game, and I have come up with my criteria.

1: Give Me Some Choices

I like to feel like I am making a difference, or that the world is changing because of me.  If the game can only be played one way and has only one outcome it kind of makes me wonder what the point of having me play it was.  I could have watched movie or read a book.  The weightier the choices the better, my favorite game Knights of the Old Republic did this wonderfully.  The choices were hard, and if you wanted to go to the Dark Side they made you feel real bad about it.

2: Make It Look Good

This may seem obvious, and that I am just looking for high polygon counts, but game can be super low end on graphics and have a great art direction and look fantastic.  Games are a visual art, and I want my eyeballs to be entertained.

3: Don’t Make it Too Hard

As I have grown older, I have gotten to be kind of a wuss when I play video games.  I don’t have the time I used to have, so I can’t perfect my technique when I play, so to be able to pick something up and be decent at it is a big plus for me.

4: Have Cool Weapons/Loot

I like upgrading stuff when I play games, whether that is getting new guns or swords, or just being able to try on new outfits, I like to get shiny carrots, and the more the better.  New games having been going away from loot like Fable III or Mass Effect 3, but getting new stuff always feels good, so please leave it in.   This is why Morrowind is my favorite Elder Scrolls game, because it hade the most loot, and the most customizable ways to wear and use the loot.

5: Mix Up the Gameplay

It is good have a great core mechanic like really great shooting or timed sword play, but it is nice to have a little mini game or something, so that you don’t just do that core mechanic over and over, #4 helps with this as well because you get to spend time deciding how to use your stuff.

If a game has these five elements, it will be something that I want to play and give some of my entertainment dollars too.

This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things!

Xbox-One

Yesterday the internet scored a major victory: It caused so much of a ruckus that it made Microsoft repeal its all digital game management system.  I however am not celebrating, no I am mourning the loss of the future.

Once people heard that the Xbox One would have to check in with its central servers every twenty-four hours in order to play their games they went ballistic.  They cried about how Microsoft was changing ownership, and how that they only ever went on the internet to complain on forums and other than that they were always in their internetless mountain hideaways.  How Microsoft was punching the poor in the face and spitting on our service members, but they forgot to stop and think about what they were gaining.

We were so close to being able to throw disks away, and not only that but than be able to trade in and share our digital content with our friends.  Once we bought a game from a store we would have installed it and activated it with our accounts, and at that point if we ever lost the disk or scratched it we could just download it again, or with my favorite ten friends and family members I could digitally loan my games to them, or if I decided I didn’t want the game anymore I could give it to one of them, or go to the store and have them remove it from my account and than have them give me money for it, but to insure that you uninstalled it Microsoft would have to check once every twenty-four hours to see that you deleted it.

But “No!” the internet said, “Microsoft is going to use the Kinect to spy on you, and every twenty-four hours they are going to watch me playing video games, and yelling at my Kinect to pause.”  Microsoft explained that the update would only include bytes of data, just an encrypted list of your game licenses and you can turn your Kinect off, but the internet wouldn’t listen, and now we are going to have to buy and manage our games the old fashioned way, and I am sad that we never made it to the future.

True Microsoft should have included an offline mode that let you disconnect and not share or add games to your account for like two weeks or something, and if you never connect to the internet than this wasn’t console for you. I wanted the future.  But thanks to raging nerds, we can’t have nice things.
