We Get To See If Westerns Can Be A Thing Again!

There are always a couple of movies that come out ever year that try and reignite America’s love for big budget Westerns.  They are usually horrible failures.  The lower budget niche westerns fair better.  The Magnificent Seven looks like it may have a chance.  The got a cast as Jacobim Mugatu would say, “Is so hot right now!”, and it looks like it has a lot of action, but we will see if that is enough to get people to go see it.

Shmee Perused The Autobiography of James T. Kirk!

autobiography-james-t-kirk-review

I said to myself the other day, “Self why haven’t you done any book reviews lately?”  I answered myself, “Well because no one reads them so why bother.”  So I had to reassure myself, “It isn’t all about the hits, plus authors enjoy it when you promote their books, and you wouldn’t want people to think you have stopped reading!”  So here we go!  The book du jour is The Autobiography of James T. Kirk by David A. Goodman.

As you can probably guess by the title the book follows the life and times of James T Kirk.  It does its best to try and fill in the gaps about everyone’s favorite Starfleet Captain.  That way it makes sense when a crazy guy in his crew frames him for murder, or when his son shows up in the Wrath of Khan.  That being said it mostly works on those gaps, so if you haven’t seen Star Trek: The Original Series or the original cast Star Trek movies it will not work as well.  Though if you haven’t seen The Original Series or the Star Trek movies why are you reading an autobiography of a fictional person that was featured in those works?

If you have done the required viewing this book is a lot of fun.  It makes Kirk feel more like a real person.  It also makes me wish that Star Trek would have been more serialized.  That way we could have seen all the characters more fleshed out while watching what happened week to week.  Who knows maybe the new series will be.

If you are a Star Trek superfan this book is a must read.  Then again you have probably already read it, but if you are more of a casual Star Trek fan like me, I still think it is worth a look.  It is a well written and fun look at an amazing fictional person that influenced a lot of lives.  I hope that David A. Goodman does Spock next.

Batman V Superman Didn’t Live Up To Expectations. Now What?

DC-entertainment

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was a total miss with the critics, and movie goers are fleeing auditoriums at record rates.  There aren’t many movies that make $800 Million worldwide and are considered failures, but BvS is considered exactly that.  The question now becomes, “What does Warner Brothers do now?”  Apparently the answer is double down.

Even with Batman v Superman ‘only’ earning $800 Million it has given Warner Brothers executives a taste of what superhero movies can do for their studio, but they also know that the clock is ticking as far as how long the spandex cash cow will last, so to retool their movie slate would cost them too much time and money.  All they can do now is try and make sure the next few movies in the DC Cinematic Universe are good so that Batman v Superman is quickly forgotten.  Judging by the amount of money they are now throwing at Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman they aren’t taking any chances.

The budgets for both of those movies have been given a significant boost after the historically bad second weekend for Batman v Superman.  People have been claiming it is has been to add more ‘funny’ scenes in to both of those films, but according to the directors the money has been pretty much for whatever they think will make the movies better.  In other words people loved Wonder Woman from BvS, and the Suicide Squad trailer got people excited, so Warner Brothers is trying to make sure they capitalize on the opportunity.

As for the Justice League movie that starts filming in a couple of weeks, it sounds like Zack Snyder is going to have to deal with a lot more suits around his shoots.  Pretty much every executive Warner Brothers has said they are going to be more involved with Justice League than they were with Batman v Superman.  I can only hope that means Justice League will be batter than Batman v Superman and not even more of a convoluted mess.

We will see if the extra money that has been pumped in to the Suicide Squad has paid off soon since the movie comes out in four short months.  The trailers have been fun, so hopefully the movie is as well.  Wonder Woman comes out early next year.

We Finally Get A Look At Doctor Strange!

I have had a hard time psyching myself up for Captain America: Civil War, but man does Doctor Strange look good.  You know what I love most?  So far there are no connections to the other Marvel movies.  I would watch this movie with or with out the ‘Marvel’ brand.  It looks like I will have one more thing to be thankful for this November!
