Let’s Cast Booster Gold!

It has been a long time since I cast a lead role for a movie.  So far movie executives haven’t used any of my choices.  Their loss.  Today we are going to try and pick the perfect lovable jerk for Booster Gold.  It was hard to find guys that could do the job that aren’t already wearing tights, but here are my amazing choices in reverse order:

5: Nathan Fillion

I know he is getting a little old for this, but no one plays a rogue better than Nathan, and if Batman and Superman are older why not Booster?  He would have to hit the gym, but I think he would pull it off aplomb.

4: Josh Holloway

Josh has already been a great rogue on TV, why not movies?  Plus he isn’t doing anything right now so he would be cheap.  I think he would fit right in with the cast of the Justice League, and he already has the golden locks.

3: Liam Hemsworth

There is just something about the Hemsworth boys that screams superhero.  With his stint as the third wheel in the Hunger Games being over, now is the perfect time to sign him up with a long term contract, and you would get a little Marvel/DC sibling rivalry going which would be fun.

2: Alan Tudyk

As we have learned from Marvel, funny men make great superheroes, and I think it is time for Alan to bulk up and don some tights!  Yes he is my second cast member from Firefly on this list, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be great as everyone’s least favorite Golden Boy.

1: Zac Efron

I was watching the trailer for Neighbors 2, and I was like, “That Zac Efron has sure come a long way.  Why isn’t he a hero yet?”.  Then it hit me.  He is funny, and he is a little jerky.  He is the perfect age for a long term deal.  Warner Brothers should lock him down.  If he came from the future to save me I would want to punch him.

There you have it.  That is my list for who should play Booster Gold.  If they decide to put Blue Beetle in this movie they should just team up Fillion and Tudyk and make everyone happy.  Well, make me happy anyway.  Who would you pick to be the hero no body wanted?

I Got Nothing, So How About Some Voltron!

I know you probably watched this already, but it is Monday, and I don’t want to have to come up with anything, so, “Yeah Voltron is coming back!!!”.  We will see if I have something to talk about tomorrow.

The Golden Jerk From The Future May Be Coming To The Big Screen!

With everyone complaining that DC’s movies aren’t any fun, Warner Brothers may have found the perfect solution, if Birth.Movies.Death is to be believed: Booster Gold.  For those of you that don’t know, Booster is a character from the future that wanted to be a superhero, so he buys a bunch of advanced tech and travels to the past.  He expects that everyone is just going to love him and his heroics, but instead they find him an insufferable self-absorbed jerk.  Which is fair because he is.

If you were looking to add some fun to your movie line up, a movie about a jerky wise cracking time traveler would be a good start, and to make things better it looks like they are looking at the creator of The Flash and Supergirl TV shows, Greg Berlanti, to direct.  A guy who knows a thing or two about making comic book characters fun.  Though he did write The Green Lantern, so I will file this under cautious optimism.

Obviously the next few movies are going to be crucial for DC, so if Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman flop, I doubt we will see this movie develop pass the preproduction stage, but at least they are going for a good character and a director who understands the universe to put things right.

Shmee Accepts Rogue Nation’s Mission Impossible!

I don’t know if you know this, but Tom Cruise keeps doing the movies called Mission: Impossible, and the fifth one came out last year!  That’s right there have been five Mission: Impossible movies with the latest one being subtitled Rogue Nation.  Mission: Impossible is a series that I enjoy, but I keep forgetting about until the next one comes out.  I don’t think Rogue Nation is going to change that.  Still good, but not super memorable.

Once again Ethan Hunt has been disavowed by his government, and he is out on his own hunting a country-less spy organization known as the Syndicate (no marks for creativity).  Well he is on his own until he decides he needs the rest of the IMF’s help anyway, and they go on a globe spanning adventure to track down and put an end to this Rogue Nation.

Honestly the stories for the Mission: Impossible movies have always kind of been what has been holding them back from being a top tier action franchise.  They are fine, but pretty generic.  Luckily the action set pieces and the high-tech breaking and entering always keep them entertaining, and there is nothing wrong with being a good popcorn flick.

These movies also serve to remind us that Tom Cruise is pretty good at what he does.  A likable man of action.  He is charismatic and charming on film, and that adds a lot to MI:RN. Rebecca Ferguson the female lead of Rogue Nation was great too.  It was nice to have someone in this movie that was every bit Hunt’s match, and someone who’s allegiances we were never quite sure of.  Apparently Paramount thought she was good too, so they are bringing her back for the sixth film.  Yes there are going to be at least six Mission: Impossible movies.

To wrap-up Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation was a solid action movie and it is worth a watch.  It has talented people spying on stuff, shooting things and driving real fast.  All stuff I enjoy, and I bet you will enjoy it too.  Though I doubt it will be anyone’s favorite movie.

Shmee Watched Captain America: Winter Soldier 2 … Uhh Sorry … Civil War!

After months of hype Captain America: Civil War is finally in theaters, and I don’t know who brought the Russo brothers in to start directing the Captain America movies, but that person was a genius.  After a good-but-great Avengers movie Disney needed a big hit to prove that their Marvel mojo was still working, and Captain America: Civil War delivered in a big way.

Civil War takes place not long after Age of Ultron, with Cap and the gang out hunting bad guys as an elite fighting force.  When things go a little sideways on a mission people start calling for the Avengers to be reined in.  Surprisingly Tony Stark is one of those people.  As you can guess from all the artwork and advertising Steve Rodgers disagrees.  Neither of those gentlemen are very good at articulating their viewpoints so they decide to fight it out.

Honestly not to get too spoilery, but Civil War is probably an overstatement of what happens in this movie.  In the end it focuses more on Cap’s buddy Bucky than whether or not superheroes need a UN leash or not.  Which isn’t a bad thing, and it does make this more of a Captain America movie than an Avengers movie.  Just unlike the last Captain America movie it doesn’t have the, “Hey where are the Avengers?” problem.  Also since it forces the heroes to face it off it gets around Marvel’s growing lack of interesting villains problem.

It was also nice that while it built on previous movies Civil War was its own thing and not a giant advertisement for movies coming down the pike.  Sure it did get the ball rolling for the Black Panther and Spider-Man movies, but not in an over the top way.  More in a, “Hey aren’t these guys cool, and don’t you want to see more of them?!” kind of way.  Yes they are, and yes we do.  My wife loved Spider-Man.

Judging by the box-office results you are all going to see Captain America: Civil War without my approval, but that is fine.  It is a good movie, and it is worth seeing.  I hope they can find a way to inject this much life in to the rest of their franchise movies because I don’t know if I can sit through another Avengers: Age of Ultron after Civil War has shown me how good the Marvel movies can be.
