Guardians Of The Galaxy Blu-Ray Update!

Guardians-of-the-Galaxy

Well Marvel’s mega-hit Guardians of the Galaxy has made it to home video in time for Christmas!  I thought I would give you my eyes on impressions of the release.  There aren’t any directors cuts or anything, so my thoughts on the actual movie itself haven’t changed, and you can read them here.

The disk transfer looks great.  The color palette really pops in high definition.  I am guessing this movie is going to be running in loops on high Hi-Def TVs in electronics stores for years to come.  It just looks amazing.  It is nice to see a comic book movie really embrace the original medium’s eye candy color scheme.

The special features are all pretty standard.  There is a making-of, a gag real, and some deleted scenes.  There aren’t any scenes that you will be disappointed didn’t make the theatrical release, but there are a couple of good jokes.  I won’t spoil them for you, but they are worth watching.  Still, they probably would have slowed down the pace of the movie to leave them in.

If you are a comic book fan, or just a Marvel movie fan, then this Blu-Ray is a must buy.  If you are just a fan of good movies, then this movie is still worth the price of admission.  It might even be worth it just to have another good movie to show off what your TV can do.

Flash VS Arrow!

flash-vs-arrow-poster

I finally got around to watching the big Flash/Arrow crossover, and I have to say that they work much better together than they do apart.  Which is impressive since they are pretty darn good apart.  The Arrow makes The Flash feel more grounded, while The Flash lets the Arrow have a little fun.  They are like peanut butter and honey: they are good apart, but better together.  This makes me wish they would listen to my idea about having a Justice Society show.  These guys could team up every week with some of their best friends.  It would be a lot of fun.

Though I have to admit Brandon Routh has been killing it as Ray Palmer, so maybe he will give Arrow that sense of fun it needs once he learns to shrink as The Atom.  That means The Flash will have to find someone serious to hang out with.  Hey maybe Constantine could come hang out if his show doesn’t get picked up for a second season.  Magic and Metahumans, that would be a crazy show.

Space Pirate Captain Harlock Is Back! … Kinda

Space-Pirate-Captain-Harlock

The original Space Pirate Captain Harlock was an Anime classic. It was one of the first Japanese cartoons to come across the Pacific Ocean and do well.  I have not watched a lot of that show, but I am still very familiar with its iconic look and cast of characters because anyone that has any interest in anime has to be.  When I saw the new 3D animated remake pop up on Netflix, I had to watch it.

The movie starts off when a mysterious young man named Yama is recruited to Harlock’s crew.  Will he help Harlock with his goal of fixing the universe, or will he become the Space Pirate’s undoing? Yama will have to uncover the truth about the legendary pirate and the ruling government The Gaia Sanction before he makes his decision.

You would think with a title like Space Pirate Captain Harlock that it would be about the titular captain and not some young upstart, but that is apparently not what Toei Animation had in mind. This movie should have been called “Yama’s Quest featuring Space Pirate Captain Harlock” because then at least I wouldn’t have been disappointed to see the great captain as a side character.  Now Yama isn’t completely uninteresting, but he isn’t a hundred year old rebel leader either.  Sure in the end they kind of bring it all together, but I was left wanting more Harlock.

Odd story choices aside, the 3D animation in the movie ranges from amazing to bad. It feels a lot like cutscene animation from a video game.  Where while the main characters and the environments look great, everything else is stiff, or copied and pasted to save money.  Even though their visual style did look very cool, I did miss the unique look that has made Harlock the anime powerhouse that he is today.  The look that anime studios are still coping.

This movie felt almost as if they were being forced to make a Space Pirate Captain Harlock movie.  They had to use the title, and kind of make it look the same, but they really wanted to make movie about this new young Yama character.  Then they used Harlock’s name and brand to sell it.  Like I said, they did try and fix it all with the ending, but by then it was too late.  This review may have sounded like I hated this movie, and that is not the case.  It is kind of a cool flick.  I am just disappointed because I wanted to see a Space Pirate Captain Harlock movie.

Marvel Casting News!

benedict-as-dr-strange

I said once Marvel had some news I would talk about it, so here we go!  It is official Benedict Cumberbatch is Doctor Strange.  I really like Cumberbatch, but I have a hard time envisioning him as the Master Magician.  Still Marvel has been on such a role lately it is hard for me to question them too much.  We will get to see him suit up in two Thanksgivings, or November 2016 for those outside of the good ‘ol USA.  Now to TV news!

Krysten-Ritterjessica_jones

Marvel and Netflix have found their Jessica Jones the superhero set’s private eye!  She will be played by Krysten Ritter.  You may remember her from Don’t Trust The B In Apartment 23, or maybe not since it was canceled.  Still, she is talented and funny, so she seems like a good choice.  Next up:

Mike Colter from the new Halo show is rumored to be the new Luke Cage for Marvel and Netflix’s 3rd show after Daredevil and Jessica Jones.  I don’t know if they could have picked anyone more perfect for the role.  Even if this one is just a rumor it needs to come true because he looks exactly like I picture Luke Cage in my mind.

If feels good to be talking about Marvel.  I hope this Marvel news train keeps on rolling.  We are still waiting on that Ant-Man trailer!

We Now Know The Cast Of The Suicide Squad And More!

Well after months of speculation we now know the cast of the Suicide Squad!  It is as follows:

Villians:

The Joker: Jared Leto

Harley Quinn: Margot Robbie

Lex Luthor: Jesse Eisenberg

Jesse-Eisenberg

Heroes:

Deadshot: Will Smith

Rick Flagg: Tom Hardy

Captain Boomerang: Jai Courtney

Enchantress: Cara Delevingne

This is a pretty great lineup (even though I was way off with my list)!  But what I like most about this cast is that it includes Enchantress.  That means the DC Movie Universe is going to introduce magic right away.  They are not waiting around like Marvel has been.  We still don’t know who will be the group’s morally gray leader Amanda Waller, but I am sure we will shortly considering this movie starts shooting soon.  David Ayer who is known for his critically acclaimed crime movies is writing and directing.  He will be a good fit for this group of rouges forced to be good.

Along the same lines the rumor is that CBS has found its Supergirl! Claire Holt from Vampire Diaries and its spinoff The Originals.  This would make a lot of sense since Warner Brothers likes to use people they have worked with before.  I have not seen the shows she has been in, so I can’t speek to her talent, but she does have the look.

Claire-Holt

Lastly it looks like the Sandman movie is about to get rolling.  They have a script everyone likes, Neil Gaiman is very involved, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt has agreed to be the titular character.  If Neil Gaiman on board so am I!

Joseph-Gordon-LevittI have been giving you a lot of DC news lately, and once Marvel does something interesting I swear that I will let you know, but for now DC is making a lot of excting moves!
