Supergirl Is Finding Her Feet But…

supergirl

Each episode of Supergirl gets better, but the problem is what isn’t on screen: Superman.  The show just can’t shake him.  They are always talking about him.  He is a major character of the show, and he has no screen time (well almost none)!  This is what I was worried about with Supergirl, and why I thought they should have gone with Kara’s Earth Two counterpart Power Girl.  By having the ‘S’ on Kara Danvers chest they are having to write around the most iconic superhero of all time.  That is not an easy task.

For now I think they would be best served by just not talking about him.  The show has established who Kara is, and that she is a hero in her own right, so now they just need to focus on her and her gang.  No more of this ‘what would Superman do’ crap.  He is not around, and this isn’t his show.  Heck it might even be good for Kara to get a new job.  That way they could make her less of a Clark Kent knock off.  Like I said, the show is getting better, and it is keeping its fun airy vibe.  It is nice to have a superhero that is enjoying herself, and there are much worse ways to spend an hour.

Shmee Finished The Sandman And Wept For There Was No More To Read!

Sandman Vol1

After what feels like quite some time, I have finished reading the mainline Sandman series from Vertigo, and like the title says I did cry a little.  For two reasons, one, it does come to an emotional end, and two, I really do wish that it went on.  Sure, sure Sandman Overture (the prequel series) is going on right now, and I will read it, but I want this story to continue to move forward.

I guess I can take solace in the fact that The Sandman was indeed one of the best comic book series I have ever read.  An opinion that I hear I am not alone in having.   The Sandman is just amazing from beginning to end.  Like most Neil Gaiman stories it does meander around from time to time, but even those sideways paths are excellent, and he does manage to bring it all together in the end.  I still stipulate that he writes the way I wish I could.

If you have the Hoopla app all of The Sandman books are now on it, and you should do yourself a favor and read them all right now.  I don’t care if you are at work or driving or whatever, they need your attention more then whatever else you are doing (well maybe not).  I am reading a lot of comic books right now thanks to Hoopla, but they all feel kind of hollow after reading The Sandman.  Curse you Neil Gaiman and your fabulous graphic series!

I am going to go stare at a wall for awhile and hope that Morpheus shows up with more of his adventures.  Maybe if I fall asleep he will come then.  I think that is my best hope.  For all of you that have not read The Sandman though, you are the lucky ones, you can just pickup a book!

The Walking Dead Season 6 Starts Off With A … Well It Started Anyway …

AMC-The-Walking-Dead-Season-6The Walking Dead season six got underway this last Sunday, and it was fine.  It was mostly Rick asserting himself as the leader while they covered what the group had been up to since we had last seen them.  Which was all good, but due to the episode being an hour and a half long it seemed to drag a little, and it was mostly a setup for next week, so there wasn’t a good conclusion to the episode.  They did do a fun alternating black and white to color effect to make it easier for the audience keep track of what was in the past and what was present. It worked really well.  I wonder if it is something they are going to keep doing?

I am excited to see what happens next week, so that is something.  The writing continues be solid.  Which means keeping Scott Gimple as the executive producer seems to be working out.  I just hope they can keep this show on the rails, and that it doesn’t outlast its welcome.  I don’t want to see any zombies jumping any sharks any time soon.  Zombie sharks on the other hand…

Brazen Concludes The Gilded Series Nicely!

brazen-christina-farley

When I took a flyer a read Gilded by Christina Farley, I was surprised by how much I liked it.  I don’t read a lot of young adult fiction, but the Gilded series has been well written and has a unique setting.  I was a little disappointed that Gilded’s follow-up Silvern was not a complete book and ended on a cliffhanger, but Brazen is a great conclusion to what Silvern started.  Maybe there will be a special edition where the two books are combined at some point.

Brazen takes place soon after the events of Silvern.  Jae Hwa is now a slave of the evil immortal Kud, and she must find away to free herself and save the people she loves as well as her home country of Korea.  It will be a massive struggle since everyone will now be working against her since they think she is Kud’s ally.

The action really ramped up in Brazen, there is rarely a page where there isn’t some butt kicking going on.  Though it still manages to get some character building and story telling worked in there as well.  Which is quite a feat since the book is under 350 pages long.  Though I enjoyed the fact that this book wasn’t 1,000 page epic with 56 main characters.  Brazen stays focused and on target.  Which is sadly something of a rarity these days.

The Gilded series has been a fun read, and it is easy to recommend to just about anyone.  If you are looking for a book series that is quick paced, full of action, and at the same time introduces you to some Korean mythology, the Gilded series will be right up your alley.  If you have read the other books in the Gilded series you should pick up Brazen right away.  I can’t wait to read what Farley writes next.
