Shmee Takes A Trip With Lego Batman 3 Goes Beyond Gotham!

lego-batman-3-beyond-gotham

Do you like Batman?  Do you like the same Lego game that Traveller’s Tales has been making for years?  Then you will like Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham.  Since this is like the 9 Millionth Lego game they have created it makes the game kind of hard to review.  You play as Lego mini-figs, you beat stuff up and collect studs, and then you finish the game.  Then you play through the game again with all your new characters and cheats to unlock everything.

There are a few things that are different, for better or worse.  For instance several characters have several different outfits, so you will need to change them constantly, and you don’t unlock the hub world (The Watchtower) until half way through the game.  Other than that what makes this game unique is the sheer amount of DC content.

Pretty much every DC hero and villain is in the game, and it is a lot of fun to use their abilities while collecting them all.  Really that is what the Lego games are all about.  Collecting your favorite characters, and Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is a massive success in that regard.

If you are looking for a cheap and fun diversion Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is worth your time and money.  If you are kind of done with the Lego games, this game is no different, and it will not change your mind.  I love DC, and I love Lego, so I am having a great time.

HBO’s Westworld Is Mystery Wrapped In An Enigma!

westworld-hbo

After the first two episodes of Westworld I still have no idea what is going on, and that is great.  Considering the fact that Westworld is based on the classic Sci-Fi film by Michael Crichton with the same name it would be easy to think that we understand what is going on here.  People go to a wild west themed amusement park inhabited by androids, and because these androids aren’t ‘real’ it allows the people visiting the park to be as terrible as they want to be.  At some point something goes wrong and the androids get their revenge.

While Westworld still seems to be headed that way, there also seems to be a much bigger game at play.  The company running Westworld apparently has some grand android plans beyond the park.  The Man in Black (Ed Harris) is looking for the game inside the game, and for the life of me I haven’t a clue what is going on with Anthony Hopkins’ character.  The android Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood) is going off the rails in a creepy and unexpected way.  Will she be bad, or will she be good?  Who knows!  I am hoping for bad.

All of this to say, I think the transition from movie to TV show has gone well.  Even if the show seems to be borrowing from every other Sci-Fi movie to have come out recently.  The only flaw that Westworld has so far is that it is very HBO, and no doubt that will turn a lot of viewers off.  Not that I can blame them.  Though I will say that all the sex and violence they have shown thus far has been displayed very matter-of-factly.  Like, ‘look at what these horrible people are doing!’. I am guessing to help us feel better about what these androids are about to do.  I am hooked so far Westwold, don’t let me down!

I Am Not Sure This Power Rangers Trailer Is For The Power Rangers…

So the new Power Rangers movie trailer came out over the weekend, and I have to say I am a little bit confused.  The tone is super serious, and I did not see one giant robot.  The show was/is as zany as they come, but this looks like everyone forgot how to laugh.  Maybe they are saving all the laughs and robots for the full movie?  For now this doesn’t look at all like the show I grew up watching at my friends’ houses because my Mom wouldn’t let me watch it at home.  I wouldn’t sneak out of the house for this.

Harlem Saves Luke Cage!

luke-cage-netflix-release-date

Luke Cage is Marvel’s third series on Netflix, and for the most part it doesn’t stray too far from the established formula.  Thankfully it is a good formula and moving the action from Hell’s Kitchen to Harlem changes things up just enough to keep things fresh.  With all the racial tension in America right now Luke Cage is the hero we need.

The series picks up fairly quickly after the events of Jessica Jones with the titular Luke Cage (Mike Colter) now working several jobs for cash under the table in Harlem.  Luckily for him one of his jobs is cleaning up Pop’s Barber Shop.  Pop (Frankie Faison) is a father figure and mentor for Luke, and Pop tries to help Luke see that he should be out saving people and not sweeping up hair and doing dishes.  Luke instead wants to keep a low profile, but fate has other plans and he is soon facing off against local gangster Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes (Mahershala Ali).

A lot of this would seem generic and boring.  Not to mention a retread of things we have seen before, but the cast and setting make this series sing.  It seems cliché to say that Harlem is a character in the show, but it truly is, and it is much more interesting than Hell’s Kitchen where all the other Netflix shows take place.  A superhero dropped in to a hotbed of police and racial tensions makes for pretty good TV.

Netflix has another hit show on its hands.  It is making the buildup to The Defenders unbearable.  I mean we still have to get through Iron Fist, but if it is half as good as Luke Cage we will be just fine.  Just a word of warning, much like Jessica Jones, this show is not for kids, but for all us adults out there it is well worth a watch.
